Christmas is a time for family, friends, gatherings and gifts. For most of you, that includes your precious canine family member, because they are part of the family if you are anything like me. Our dogs definitely have their own stockings hanging by the chimney with care – with their names upon them. Your dogs may not be able to write a Christmas wish list to Santa like the children do but there are certain things that he must dream about day and night, things you can find at your local Rockford-area Petsmart or Petco as listed below or one closest to your home.
The first thing that any dog would wish for is a loving home and family to love and be loved. In that loving home your dog would cherish a nice comfy bed to lie on. If you have an older dog or one that stays outdoors often, you can choose a self-warming bed or crate mat to keep your dog snugly warm. This is a great choice for the little dog that is always cold. The larger dog may appreciate an orthopedic bed for comfort.
Food is something most dogs would wish for and dream of like a big old juicy steak! That is not advisable for his Christmas dinner but filling the stocking with special rawhide sticks, flip chips and bones is a great treat choice for your dog’s Christmas pleasure. Don’t forget to throw in some dental bones as well. These Christmas gifts are more than just a treat – these serve to keep the teeth clean and healthy while making your dog happy.
If your dog’s collar is starting to fray and the dog tag is barely readable, a new collar, possibly matching leash and shiny new tags would set your pooch out in style. I don’t know about your pups but when I bathe my dogs, taking off their collars momentarily, they are actually restless until I put them back on. This is a great gift idea.
Providing healthy edible treats is another gift idea for your dog. There are many more choices besides the original milk bone for dogs. There are soft treats, crunchy treats, low-fat treats, treats specific for your dog’s size and treats for optimum oral care. I always feel that as long as I am giving my dogs a treat, I want it to be something that will benefit them. To them it is a treat; to me it is a healthy alternative they love.
Toys are always a necessity for your dog and make a super gift as well. I have a little Chihuahua that loves his (and the other dogs) toys and would play 24 hours a day if allowed. Many dogs favor only one toy while others are just like kids and love a new toy to play with repeatedly. When it comes to the larger more powerful dog, the Kong toy is a great addition that your dog should appreciate, because it is hard and relatively indestructible. The nice thing about the Kong is that you can place some treats on the inside of the toy to give your dog hours of pleasure while trying to get them out. A great gift idea for your dog.
There are many gift ideas for your dog or dogs on your gift list. Your local neighborhood store for pets can provide other suggestions to fulfill your dog’s wish list and enjoy a great holiday season. Just a little tip I have found – don’t put the rawhides or treats wrapped up under the tree. Your pup’s sniffer will know they are there. Let Santa place the gift there after the family – and the pup have gone to bed for the night. What a surprise on Christmas morning!
