The year 2012 had its share of ups and downs for “X Factor” stars when it came to their love lives and baby news. Here’s a summary of what happened in the year:
ROMANCES AND BREAKUPS
“The X Factor” executive producer Simon Cowell began the year in January 2012 by finally admitting to the media what had already been widely reported since late 2011: He and Mezhgan Hussainy had broken up. The former couple got engaged in 2010. According to Tom Bower’s 2012 unauthorized biography “Sweet Revenge: The Intimate Life of Simon Cowell,” Hussainy (who is a former “American Idol” makeup artist) and Cowell secretly broke up in the spring of 2011 but agreed to pretend to still be a couple until after “The X Factor” U.S. launched in September 2011. Since the breakup with Hussainy, Cowell has been seen casually dating actress/singer Carmen Electra, socialite Ana Paula Junqueira, singer/songwriter Louise Griffiths and actress Janina Gavankar.
“The X Factor” U.K. judge Tulisa Contostavlos also had a very active dating life in 2012. Her on-again/off-again romance with her N-Dubz band mate Richard “Fazer” Rawson ended in January 2012. She then reportedly had a fling with Grammy-winning songwriter/producer The-Dream (who worked with her on her first solo album), and then she moved on to dating actor Jack O’Connell from March to June 2012.
She had a brief romance from September to October 2012 with actor Jody Latham. In October 2012, she broke up with Latham and began dating soccer player Danny Simpson. Her relationship with Simpson caused much controversy, as several of his ex-lovers gave tabloid interviews saying that he’s a cheater and they warned Contostavlos that Simpson will cheat on her too. Simpson’s ex-girlfriend Stephanie Ward (the mother of two of Simpson’s children) accused Contostavlos of being a homewrecker, but Contostavlos and Simpson said that they got together several months after Simpson had broken up with Ward.
One Direction (which came in third place on “The X Factor” U.K. in 2010) kept tabloids and other gossip media busy, as the teen-idol group became the biggest boy band and biggest “X Factor” act in the world in 2012, with No. 1 hits and sold-out tours in several countries.
One Direction’s Harry Styles was the focus of most of the gossip. In January 2012, he ended his controversial fourth-month fling with “The Xtra Factor” co-host Caroline Flack, who is 15 years older than Styles. After his split from Flack, Styles was romantically linked to several women, including model Emma Ostilly, former “Made in Chelsea” star Caggie Dunlop, singer/former “X Factor” Australia judge Natalia Imbruglia, model/actress Emily Atack, photographer Sarah-Louis Colivet, singer Lily Halpern, model Cara Delevingne and Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Taylor Swift. By November 2012, Styles and Swift rekindled their romance that had started in the spring of 2012. By the end of the year, sources were telling the media that Styles and Swift were in love and in a steady and exclusive relationship. Styles and Swift have not yet publicly commented on their relationship, even though they have been acting like a couple in public since November 2012.
One Direction’s Zayn Malik also got a steady girlfriend in 2012: He and Perrie Edwards of Little Mix began dating in April, although there were rumors back in late 2011 that Malik was romantically interested in her. Malik has declared his love for Edwards many times in interviews and on Twitter.
Meanwhile, One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson continued to battle rumors that he is secretly gay and in love with Styles. Tomlinson has adamantly denied those rumors and has said in many interviews that he is in love with and has a monogamous relationship with Eleanor Calder, the University of Manchester student whom he has been dating since late 2011.
One Direction’s Niall Horan has not had a steady girlfriend since One Direction found fame on “The X Factor” U.K. in 2010, although in 2012, he casually dated “The X Factor” U.S. judge Demi Lovato and drama student Amy Green. Lovato and Horan have both said in interviews that they are too busy with their careers to be in a serious relationship.
One Direction’s Liam Payne and his dancer girlfriend, Danielle Peazer (who have been dating since late 2010), moved in together in mid-2012, they broke up in September 2012 and got back together in December 2012. During the breakup, Payne casually dated “The X Factor” U.K. 2006 winner Leona Lewis, whom he says is his longtime celebrity crush, but the rebound relationship turned out to be short-lived.
Speaking of Lewis, she had her own breakup and makeup in 2012. She and dancer Dennis Jauch (who have been dating since 2010) split up in September 2012. Sources told the tabloids that Lewis dated One Direction’s Payne on the rebound to make Jauch jealous. Apparently, it worked because Jauch and Lewis were back together by December 2012.
The four members of Little Mix (“The X Factor” U.K. 2011 winner) also had changes in their love lives in 2012. As previously mentioned, Little Mix’s Edwards and One Direction’s Malik began dating in April 2012.
Also in the spring of 2012, Little Mix’s Jesy Nelson began dating Jordan Banjo of the dance troupe Diversity, which won “Britain’s Got Talent” in 2009. Little Mix’s Jade Thirlwall also began dating Sam Chaske, another member of Diversity, around the same time as Nelson and Banjo began dating.
In February 2012, Little Mix’s Leigh-Anne Pinnock broke up with Natahanuel Diamond, her boyfriend of five years. Pinnock says that she has been unattached ever since and has denied reports that she dated Cover Drive bass player Jamar Harding.
May 2012 was a month of breakups for “The X Factor” U.K. 2010 winner Matt Cardle. He parted ways with Sony Music, and his relationship with live-in girlfriend Sarah Robinson (an “X Factor” U.K. dancer) also ended that month. Cardle and Robinson had been dating since late 2010.
“The X Factor” U.K. 2012 winner James Arthur established a reputation for being a ladies’ man. In September 2012, shortly after he found fame on “The X Factor,” he broke up with 18-year-old dance instructor Lucie Poole. A source told the Sunday Mirror that Arthur’s busy schedule was the main reason for the split. After the breakup, he was romantically linked to former “Take Me Out” contestant Chanelle McCleary, bodybuilder Jodie Marsh, “The Xtra Factor” co-host Flack and “Made in Chelsea” co-star Kimberley Garner.
“The X Factor” U.K. 2008 winner Alexandra Burke was unlucky in love in 2012. Her three-month romance with soccer player Jermain Defoe ended badly in May 2012, amid tabloid reports that he cheated on her. There have also been reports that she wanted to date One Direction’s Horan but that he turned her down because he just wants a platonic friendship with her.
Openly gay Marcus Collins (who came in second place on “The X Factor” U.K. in 2011) announced in February 2012 that he had split from David Heath, his boyfriend since 2008. Collins and Heath used to be in the now-defunct singing group Eton Road together.
Former “X Factor” judge Cheryl Cole and her backup dancer Tre Holloway went public with their romance in July 2012.
Former “X Factor” U.K. judge Dannii Minogue announced her split from boyfriend Kris Smith, a rugby-player-turned-model, in April 2012. Minogue and Smith (who began dating in 2008) have a son named Ethan, who was born in 2010.
In March 2012, “The X Factor” Australia judge Ronan Keating announced that he and his wife, Yvonne Keating, had separated. She later said on Twitter that they actually split up at the end of 2011. The former couple, who got married in 1998 and have three kids together, have since moved on to dating other people. He is in a serious relationship with former “X Factor” Australia producer Storm Uechtritz; the couple went public with their romance in September 2012, around the same time that they moved in together.
RUMORED BREAKUPS THAT DIDN’T HAPPEN IN 2012
Some “X Factor” stars were the subject of a lot of gossip and predictions that they would break up with their significant others in 2012. But by the end of the year, these couples were still together:
Britney Spears (“The X Factor” U.S. judge) and her former agent Jason Trawick. They’ve been together since 2009 and got engaged in 2011.
Khloe Kardashian (“The X Factor” U.S. co-host) and basketball player Lamar Odom. They got married in 2009, after dating each other for only a few weeks.
Nicole Scherzinger (“The X Factor” U.K. judge) and Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton. They’ve been an on-again/off-again couple since 2008.
“The X Factor” U.K. host Dermot O’Leary married TV producer Dee Koppang on September 14, 2012, in Chiddingstone, England. The couple has been together since 2002 and got engaged in 2011.
“The X Factor” U.S. co-host Mario Lopez married actress Courtney Mazza on December 1, 2012, in Punta Mita, Mexico. The couple has been together since 2008 and got engaged in 2011. They also have a daughter named Gia, who was born in 2010. Mazza changed her last name to Lopez.
Marvin Humes of JLS (“The X Factor” U.K. second-place finalist in 2008) married Rochelle Wiseman of The Saturdays on July 27, 2012, in Woodstock, England, The couple has been together since 2010 and got engaged in 2011. Wiseman changed her last name to Humes.
Katie Waissel (who came in seventh place on “The X Factor” U.K. in 2010) and model Brad Alphonso had a quickie courtship of only a few months before they got married in New Orleans on September 9, 2012. The marriage ended just as quickly, as reports surfaced that Waissel and Alphonso had broken up by late November 2012.
RUMORED MARRIAGES THAT DIDN’T HAPPEN IN 2012
These couples were rumored to be getting married in 2012, but the weddings didn’t happen:
As previously mentioned, Spears and Trawick (together since 2009, engaged since 2011) have been the subject of many false rumors about their relationship. Some tabloids reported that the couple would be married in December 2012, which turned out to be another false rumor.
Cher Lloyd (who came in fourth place on “The X Factor” U.K. in 2010) and hair stylist Craig Monk got engaged in 2011. She told the media that she was getting married in the summer 2012. Lloyd is now being vague in interviews about when she and Monk are getting married.
One Direction’s Styles and Grammy winner Swift had the most far-fetched marriage rumor about them. Some tabloids said that Swift and Styles would elope by the end of 2012. In reality, almost no one thinks that this couple will get married, and many people are predicting that Styles and Swift will break up by mid-2013.
Marvin and Rochelle Humes announced in November 2012 that they are expecting their first child in 2013.
“The X Factor” U.K. judge Gary Barlow and his family suffered a tragic loss with the death of his and his wife Dawn’s fourth child, a baby girl name Poppy, who was delivered as a stillborn in London on August 4, 2012. The couple’s three other children are Daniel (born 2000), Emily (born 2002) and Daisy (born 2009).
Stacey Solomon, who came in third place on “The X Factor” U.K. in 2009, welcomed her second child, a boy named Leighton, who was born in London on May 5, 2012. The father is Solomon’s fiancé, Aaron Barham, who is a painter. Solomon has another son named Zachary (born in 2008), whose father is her ex-boyfriend Dean Cox.
Guy Sebastian (“The X Factor” Australia judge) and his wife, Jules, welcomed their first child, a son named Hudson, who was born in Sydney on March 3, 2012.
