It it Thanksgiving week on FOX’s The X-Factor USA and the contestants brought out the emotions as hosts Khloe Kardashian Odom — who looked her best — and Mario Lopez tried to hold the contestants together.
Each contestant, with their mentor/judge, chose a song that they would like to dedicate to someone that they are thankful for. As if their talents alone don’t bring emotion to the stage, each X-Factor hopeful had a package before their performances about who they’re dedicating their song to and why. Of course, the audience was in tears before their songs even began.
Some of the noteworthy performances were those of Vino Alan — who officially won me over tonight with his performance of “God Bless the USA” dedicated to the U.S. troops. Carly Rose — who was introduced by mentor Britney Spears as Arin Ray and quickly corrected — did, in Simon Cowell’s words, one of the best renditions of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” for her older brother. Diamond White’s performance of Celine Dion’s “Because You Loved Me” dedicated to her mother was another incredible choice. All of these vocals exuded true, genuine emotion and brought the house to tears. Even the contestants themselves sometimes became so overwhelmed with emotion they had to take breaths between notes.
However, aside from all of the tears and joy, there were just a couple of performances that were subpar compared to the other voices. One of those was Arin Ray performing “Hero” to his brother. There was pretty much no emotion in his voice and besides that — no power. It wasn’t gut wrenching and didn’t bring anyone to their feet. He just sang it and let it sit there for a bit — another average, or even below average performer from the teen on Spears’ team. The second subpar performance came from CeCe Frey who performed Bette Midler’s “Wind Beneath My Wings” for her sister who passed at the age of 7 due to cerebral palsy. Her performance was filled with pure emotion and gut wrenching notes, but her voice just couldn’t keep up. It is understandable that the young singer’s emotions held her voice back, but week after week she has proven that her voice just can’t compete with the rest of the competitors. Demi Lovato has to really work with her to help give Frey the right songs.
With all that said and done and even a performance by Paige Thomas of the Spears hit “Everytime”, the two that are in most trouble are probably Ray and Frey. Cowell said that Thomas would be in trouble, but her performance had more substance than that of the other two.
Tune in tomorrow night — yep, Thanksgiving night — to find out who goes home and who made it to the top of the chart.
