In this year in which people are fixated on the end of the Mayan calendar and by extension the end of civilization as we know it, it may be no surprise that this theme figures prominently in the new movie starring Will and Jaden Smith. After Earth, directed by The Sixth Sense director, M. Night Shyamalan, doesn’t call up the zombie apocalypse in which humans run from other humans. Rather, its warning might be more subtle; the beautiful things that surround us may be deadly, but fearing them is even more so.

The After Earth trailer crashes into the viewers’ consciousness with an opening sequence of the crash landing that gets the story rolling. Cypher Raige (Will Smith) and his son, Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) bump their way through an asteroid storm that forces them to crash land on earth, which hasn’t seen human inhabitants for a thousand years after cataclysmic events forced people to move to a new home on Nova Prime. Earth is a hostile planet filled with evolved species, ranging from terrifying saber-toothed cats to species only yet to be named. In this way, the environment of the planet becomes a character in the film as well, forcing Jaden Smith to learn what he’s made of as he fights against these elements to retrieve the rescue beacon that will bring help.
After Earth will be released in the U.S. on June 7, 2013. In addition to starring Will and Jaden Smith, Isabelle Fuhrman and Zoë Kravitz also star in the film. This movie trailer comes on the heals of another end-of-the-earth-as-we-know-it film trailer that came out in the last couple of days. Oblivion, starring Tom Cruise, also deals with an earth not inhabitable by humans any longer. It comes out just a couple of months before After Earth on April 19, 2013.
