Even the most disinterested are curious about who will be the next president of the United States. Needless to say, most news stations and online media are buzzing with taking bits of data and analyzing it to death. In a very tight election, that is no surprise indeed.
What do Christians make of this activity overload? Firstly, Christians are free to vote to the candidate of their choice. They examine which candidate seems more aligned to biblical values and make their choice. Ultimately every citizen of America has that choice that they can make today to determine, from a human perspective, who the next president will be.
So, who will win? We may know the answer later tonight or tomorrow. However, there is one person who knows the answer already and he’s not talking about the result! The Bible says that God is the person who lifts kings up and brings kings down. He is the one who raises up good men for the success of the country or allows wicked or weak rulers to bring it down.
God’s rule extends far beyond what any president can ever do. Not only does God govern the universe in its widest extent, but he is actively involved in the lives of every single individual. So, when it comes to the election of the president, one thing is sure, the person whom God has in mind will surely win.
But that is of no help to me, you may say. Is that really true? Actually, many hedge their bets on the man they voted for, hoping that he will rescue them from their economic crisis. The question they should be asking is, is it the president who rescues the nation? Ultimately, Christians hope not simply in human agency, but in the divine.
Only God provides lasting help. Only God knows the course of our nation for the next four years. Only God knows who will win. Yes, even as the nation’s destiny seems poised on the victory of Romney or Obama, your own destiny is even more tightly governed by the hand of God.
