The tickets are booked and you’re ready to head out of town. Whether it’s home for the holidays or to meet the parents, Thanksgiving kicks off that most wonderful time of the year. For most of us, the season of merriment and family means travel. No matter where your destination, hopping a plane from HSV or following an eight-hour car trip, there is a way to arrive and visit in style with space-saving, savvy packing tips.
A few items that build a mix and match capsule wardrobe are your best bet. Pick a palette that works for you and stick to it. This doesn’t have to be boring, with a little creativity, you’ll find it works beautifully. For tips on combining the collection see What to wear: Thanksgiving 2012
Start with a pair of jeans in your favorite fit in a wash that works for day or night. A dark pair is great for its ability to work in any situation, from a casual afternoon around the fire to a night catching up with old friends at the watering hole.
The classic motorcycle jacket keeps you warm and works with anything. Throw it over a button-up and jeans (sans arms in armholes) and show off your superhero style credentials for a quick run for coffee, or wear it out with a bold dress for a night on the town.
A cardigan is a layering must and will keep you warm on the plane and stand in as an early morning cover-up over PJs.
Pick a practical button up with day or night styling options. Perfect for passing the football at half time, but ready to dress up a bit with the right accessories.
A shift dress is a must. Almost as important is an elastic waistband (or none at all.) Wear it with dressy heels for a glamorous spin, or take it in a casual direction with your favorite boots.
Pack a tissue thin turtleneck. For your eyes only, this layering piece should fit like a second skin. Wear it to warm up your dress or layer with your button-up and sweater .
When it comes to shoes, keep it simple. A classic pump and a versatile boot are your best bets. Don’t forget the socks, the sweater tights and of course accessories. To add dimension and make the layers sing, be sure to pack a belt.
Decrease the risk of losing a favorite piece in a crowded house and pack only a few items of jewelry. One set for casual wear and dressy clip-on earrings with tons of sparkle are best. The clips have loads of styling options beyond your ears and can dress up your hair, a collar or the neck of a sweater.
