“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you.” – Isaiah 43:2a
What a wonderful and most comforting promise from our Father! God didn’t say “if” we pass through the waters, our loving Father said “when.” It is an unquestionable truth that the storms of life, the attempts of the enemy will come against us. As people living in a fallen world, these storms are an occupational hazard.
But for the children of God (and even many of those yet not saved), God promises that He will be with us through these trials and tribulations. God promises His children that “‘No weapon that is formed against you will prosper; and every tongue that accuses you in judgment you will condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their vindication is from Me,’ declares the LORD.”
The Hebrew word for “pass” as used here is abar (pr. aw-bar) which means to “carry over, deliver” (Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance). What an amazing Father we have! God not only said that He would be with us when we pass thought the waters, but that He will carry us! Our most loving and protective Father will pick us up, put us on His shoulders, and carry us across the storms of life. He most assuredly will deliver us from evil (Matthew 6:13). God is our Jehova HaPalat (pr. hap-pah-LAT), God our Deliverer.
When we are going through, God is going through with us. “Through,” in the Hebrew and used in the two instances in this verse, is bmow (pr. bem-o), meaning “with.” There isn’t any place we can go, or anything we go through where God is not with us. The Psalmist King David testified “Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there Your hand shall lead me, and Your right hand shall hold me. If I say, ‘Surely the darkness shall fall on me,’ Even the night shall be light about me; indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You, but the night shines as the day; the darkness and the light are both alike to You” (Psalm 139:7-12).
The waters are the mayim (pr. mah-yim), which are the floods. God assures His children that “when the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him” (Isaiah 59:19). God Himself will raise us up, so that the waters will not overflow us; which is shataph (pr. shaw-taf), and means “to inundate, conquer, overwhelm, drown.” God will not allow the floods of life, or the strategies of the evil one to overtake us, overwhelm us, or to conquer us. The Psalmist marveled that if it had not been for the Lord, Who was on his side, he would have gone under (Psalm 124:1-3).
My brothers and sisters, many of us are going through right now, and it feels like we are about to be consumed and overtaken by the floods of life; but I promise you, that if you put your faith in your Father, He will not allow you to go under. Jesus comforts us greatly in His sure and everlasting promise: “And surely I am with you always, even to the end of time” (Matthew 28:20).
Father, thank you for being with us and carrying us through the waters. Thank you for never leaving us nor forsaking us (Hebrews 13:5). Build up within us, Most Assured Father, Your standard of faith that we need, and is required for us to secure the victory. In Jesus Name, we thank You that You have already caused us to rise above in victory over every rising tide. Amen and Amen!
Take action! Challenge your thinking! Choose to focus on God’s faithfulness rather than the rising level of the waters that encircle you. Choose to look up to the Father and not down at your situation. And continue to fight the good fight of floating on the water; for God, your Life Raft, has already given you the victory!
