The last download for my iPhone I noticed the purple mobile application that was staring at me. I thought I knew what a podcast was but why haven’t I really used this tool before? According to a recent Edison research poll about podcasts I am not alone. Only 29% of Americans have listened to an audio podcast before and only 45% are familiar with the term. The data suggests the more mobility becomes a part of society, the more the podcast arena will grow.
According to Wikipedia, a podcast is a type of digital media consisting of episodic series material relating to audio, video, and radio — or documents. A podcast can contain a combination of all. What’s so great about that? Even though I saw it, I still didn’t use it until this weekend. While attending Extreme Pitch at Gangplank in Chandler, Arizona — a pitch competition for some local startups, I met a gentleman who informed me the importance of some people I should listen to. Although, I still haven’t found the specific channels he recommended there are some excellent resources for topics I am constantly wanting to learn more about. Startups, for example. StartupLucky has been very entertaining and educational. It is a video podcast however the media is communicated mainly through audio. This Week in Startups is audio as well, hosted by Jason Calacanis.
Podcasts are beginning to play a major role in marketing. Especially, for companies that do not have the budgets of Coca-Cola or McDonalds. They are hitting your target market, your niche and it is a very effective form of marketing. The cost of distribution is equivalent to the cost of the data transfer. The more expensive the data, the more expensive the feed (http://www.apple.com/itunes/podcasts/). But extremely inexpensive compared to other media forms such as TV, print and radio. The podcasts are simple to maintain and easy to create. The greatest piece about podcasts is that the channel is exclusive to the host allowing for a platform they control without having to compete with advertisers or competitors on the same feed. It will be valued off the content they provide and subscriber base and it has less red tape.
Why is the podcast mobile application so awesome? It allows you to listen or stream the content which excites you or grows you as an individual. Interviews, analysis, opinions, news, jokes, lectures, how-to’s and many other niches. If you have iTunes, go to iTunes Store and click on Podcasts in the menu. You can review and research through thousands of podcasts containing all sorts of content.
