In contemprary Christian culture it has become commonplace to express a desire to give God Glory, to Glorify His name and even to seek His glory but I wonder how many understand what the Glory of God is. The Glory of God is the result of God’s nature. it is not an object which can be define by human expressions because it is something that is both experienced or perhaps it would be better said is witnessed or understood by us and received by God. It is the cosmoslogical response to God existence and revelation to the created world. It is the understand of God that produces His authority.
It is the indescrible brightness that emenates from His, the awe inspiring terror s produced by entering into His presence, it is what produces shame because of our unholiness. It is often described as light, not light that is produced by the sun or the starts because that is simply an copy designed to point the the greater truth of Him, but light, the light that has no beginning and has no end, it is the light by which light is defined. It is honor that cannot be denied, it is truth and can neither be explained, debated or denied. It is creations response to the will of God, which itself seeks to describe His nature it is, the midst that proceeds and follows Him.
So how do we give God glory, how do we give God what we by the nature of our creation do not have, How do we who are with out honor honor Him who is honor, how do we who are without beauty give beauty to Him who is beauty personified. What do we who have nothing offer such a great God who is the creator and possessor of everything.
What does it mean to glorify God or to give Him glory, is it to simply shout the names we have given Him which serve merely to limit and define Him, Is it to recount His attributes that we have been blessed by Him to recognize, is it to boast of our commitment to Him, a commitment that in truth is seldom honored and often quickly forgotten.
When we promise to glorify His name what do we mean, How do you give honor to the name of Honor, what words do we use to bless the unlimited God?
I would suggest that the only way to truly Glorify God is to make a offering of ourselves, to render our lives, our will, our desire nothing before Him, to recognize the truth of our value in comparison o His will. To die to ourselves so that through our death, our surrender those who cannot not see Him, have not beheld His glory can through us see Him, see Him move, see Him act, see the greatness of His will and the wisdom of His ways. That is the only way to bring Him glory to become a reflection of His thoughts, His desires, His will.
