Seven Year War from Orange County is a pop/punk band that has had some good runs in the last few years. The new EP “Welcome to the Workforce” is a blend of radio friendly punk songs with a good amount of classic punk riffs thrown in. Working with Erich Talaba who has helped groups like Fall Out Boy and Yellowcard the band put together a very good disc. The band has definitely had their share of ups and downs most recently with bassist Josh Barrow leaving the band. But that has not stopped the remaining members Johannes Sandoval on vocals, Levi Sandoval on guitar/vocals, and Matt Zavala on drums from continuing the dream. With influences ranging from Black Flag and Elvis to Blink 182 and Johnny Cash the lads have continued to make songs and build a dedicated fan base despite now being a 3 piece. According to Phsyco Mike from The World Famous KROQ “Seven Year War, That’s the band, You got to listen to them , Fully Fully Endorsed By Me”. Even Stryker from KROQ weighed in on the lads “There is a band out there you should listen to, and go see them live because they are really good they are called Seven Year War”.
The sound of the disc is very much a continuation of Blink 182, New Found Glory or The Ataris but the quality of the musicians is right where it needs to be and not just another knock off trying to capitalize on what has already been done. Teen girls who like their punk with more pop will love this band but if you’re looking for down and gritty punk then this is not the band for you.
The opening track “Suburbia” is descent and has more Rancid in it than the rest of the tracks and could grab some attention. “Good Guys” and “Take Take” are very radio friendly showing just how ready for mainstream success the band is. They have a good idea how to possibly write a radio song. “White Lies” and “Not Alone” are personal favorites and the guitar on “Not Alone” is great.
For just 5 tracks the disc will keep you moving and may even bring back memories of a time when life may have been easier and less complicated. Look for Johannes, Levi and Matt to continue making strides with Seven Year War in 2013. Having already shared the stage with Shiny Toy Guns, Starpool (members of No Doubt and Save Ferris), Call The Cops, Franki Doll & The Broken Toys, T Mills and Too Short, they are set to play with Thrice, Unwritten Law and Steel Panther. The band is scheduled to appear in CA, OR, WA, UT, ID, CO, NV, and AZ very soon.
