With several highly-anticipated new releases hitting theaters Christmas Day, there were a lot of great movies playing over the holiday. But this weekend, “The Hobbit” was the king again, taking the top spot for the third weekend in a row with barely any change in its gross from last weekend. Peter Jackson’s epic fantasy took in $32.9 million.
But “Django Unchained” wasn’t far behind. Loyal fans of director Quentin Tarantino turned out for his latest film—a western about a slave searching for his wife— in droves, and despite its R rating, it made $30.6 million its opening weekend. Another new movie, the film adaptation of the Broadway musical “Les Miserables”, also performed very well, coming in third with $28.02 million. “Parental Guidance”, a family comedy starring Billy Crystal as a man trying to forge a relationship with his grandkids, debuted in fourth with $14.8 million.
Thanks to the extra people deciding to spend some of their free time at the movies this week, other movies experienced a slight boost in revenue. “Silver Linings Playbook”, which also opened in almost 375 more theaters this weekend, jumped back into the top 12, while “Lincoln”, “Monsters, Inc. 3D”, “This Is 40”, and “The Guilt Trip” all performed better than before.
