Artist Christine Reichow was one of the artists who exhibited at this past weekend’s 2nd Annual Coconut Point New Year’s Weekend Art Festival. One of the paintings on display in her booth was Wild One, a botanical watercolor that was recently accepted by the Florida Watercolor Society into their 41st Anniversary Exhibition.
“It’s an honor to be juried into the exhibition,” Reichow noted on Sunday. “There are hundreds of entries, and the Society only accepts a small number.”
Ninety-nine entries were juried into the exhibition for 2012, and along with Reichow, other area artists whose work made it into the show include Cheryl Fausel, David Belling and Diane Schmidt.
Reichow specializes in botanicals, florals and wildlife paintings. Watercolor is a medium that uniquely enables Reichow to create leaves, petals, anthers and feathers that are as luminous as they are transparent. No matter the motif, Reichow’s compositions convey an intimate and deeply-felt love for the delicacy and serenity of the natural world that surrounds her. There is a Zen-like quality to her depictions. They encourage the viewer to become centered, to re-establish a primordial connection to the universe and its cosmic rules of order.
Reichow traces her respect for nature to her father. He taught her from an early age to quietly observe nesting birds and to listen to the way they communicate with each other through melodic warbling. Her lexicon growing up became the names of the trees, plants and flowers that she and her dad encountered as they roamed the Michigan countryside.
A member of the American Watercolor Society, Florida Watercolor Society, Watercolor West, and Transparent Watercolor Society, and a signature member of the National Watercolor Society, Reichow’s work ethic is reflected by her 2013 exhibition schedule. She may have opened the year at the 2nd Annual Coconut Point New Year’s Weekend Art Festival, but in the coming months she will exhibit at the:
