The Liberty Coalition declares “We are a Liberty & Peace grassroots group running independent candidates & causes outside the rigged Two-Party System and its Registered Parties.”
Their website says they’re open to all people of all backgrounds, including libertarians, but “Coalition supporters must firmly hold to the 6 Principles in their entirety.”
Reading through their “6 Principles of Liberty, Peace & Local Markets” is enough to give any libertarian pause.
Principle 1 calls for the abolition of US Wars and a return to peaceful markets and international commerce.
Left Libertarians and most other peace-loving people will certainly agree with the first and anarcho-capitalists especially will like the latter.
The second principle is a continuation of the first and will please all anti-war humans with “Abolition of Foreign Empire and Redeployment home of all US troops.”
Next is the abolition of central banking and a return to local markets for the People.
That will get the backing of all End the Fed libertarians and Ron Paulians but what’s this “local markets for the People?” How is that a “principle?” Why not laissez-faire free markets for everyone, period? It’s the only way we’ll create enough jobs for all those US troops we’re redeploying home.
Now comes the real trouble for Libertarians:
“5) Abolition of FDA & GMO Corporations and Return to local, organic Agriculture.”
Abolition of the FDA? Check. But the fight over GMO food is about as scientifically settled as global warming vs. anti-warming, vaccines vs. anti-vaccination, cellphones causing cancer, and genetic vs. environmental causes for psychopathy, autism, intelligence, ad infinitum. And what’s this “Return to local, organic Agriculture?” What if a farmer chooses to use chemical pesticides and fertilizer? What happens to his “Liberty & Peace?”
It gets worse.
Principle 6 reads in full: “Abolition of Corporate Influence in Washington and Dissolution of any and all corporations found bribing public officials, and its assets deposited into the US Treasury.”
How does it make sense to dissolve a corporation and give its assets to a government that’s run by those very same bribe-taking public officials? They’re the other half of the problem. The libertarian solution is to dissolve all interactions between economy and state, and dissolve all legitimacy for coercion, intimidation and fraud from all sources, especially government.
Otherwise it’s not all about “Liberty & Peace” after all.
Eventually every “good idea” except libertarianism and its non-aggression principle degenerates into authoritarianism.
