Day of the Covenant
Monday, Nov. 26. On Monday, many members of the Bahá’í Faith will observe the Day of the Covenant. On this day, Bahá’ís commemorate ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Bahá’u’lláh’s oldest son and his named successor. This is also a time to celebrate the Covenant of Bahá’u’lláh, in which Bahá’u’lláh vowed that, if the Bahá’í community followed and obeyed ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, they would remain unified and experience the Kingdom of God on earth. This is one of only two Bahá’í holy days on which work is not suspended.
Ascension of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá
Wednesday, Nov. 28. Just two days after the Day of the Covenant, Bahá’ís commemorate the death and heavenly ascension of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá. This holy day is a time to reflect on ‘Abdu’l-Bahá’s life and to re-dedicate oneself to following his example. The Ascension of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá is the second of only two Bahá’í holy days on which work is not suspended.
Birth of Guru Nanak Dev Sahib
Wednesday, Nov. 28. Sikhs will celebrate the birth of the first Guru and founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak Dev Sahib. Observation of this holiday includes reading the Guru Granth Sahib (the Sikh holy scripture), holding processions, singing hymns, praying, reciting poems of praise, and sharing a meal.
Bay Colony Garden Club Greens Sale and Holiday Market
Thursday, Nov. 29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Bay Colony Garden Club will hold its annual Greens Sale and Holiday Market at Galilee Episcopal Church. The event will feature fresh greenery, holiday gifts, and baked goods.

Friday, Nov. 30 through Sunday, Dec. 2 at King’s Grant Presbyterian Church. St. Nicholas Catholic Church and King’s Grant Presbyterian Church will present their annual recreation of Bethlehem at the time of Jesus’ birth. Experience the sights, tastes, smells, sounds, and atmosphere of the first Christmas. The Bethlehem Walk is free and open to the public; visit the event website for hours. St. Luke’s UMC Craft Show
Saturday, Dec. 1 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. St. Luke’s United Methodist Church will hold a craft show featuring crafts and refreshments.
Annual Holiday Greens Sale and Artists and Craftsmen Show and Sale
Saturday, Dec. 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Thoroughgood Garden Club and Civic League will hold its annual holiday event at the Adam Thoroughgood House. This event will feature a chili cook-off, bake sale, bounce house, fresh wreaths and greenery, holiday gifts and decorations made by local artisans, and a visit from Santa Claus.
Christmas Home Tour
Saturday, Dec. 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Council of Garden Clubs of Virginia Beach will present a Christmas Home Tour at the Duckworth home. The event will feature ornament displays and baked goods. Tickets are $5; call 757-486-1733 for more information.
Holiday Parade at the Beach
Saturday, Dec. 1 at 5:30 p.m. The Holiday Parade at the Beach will travel up Atlantic Avenue from 15th Street to 25th Street. The parade will feature lighted floats, dance groups, marching bands, fire trucks, Santa Claus, and more.
Sunday, Dec. 2 through Monday, Dec. 24. Sunday marks the beginning of the new worship year for most Christian churches and the first Sunday in the season of Advent. Advent is a time to prepare for the celebration of Jesus’ birth. For more about Advent, read “Happy New Year, Christians.”
