The Humane Society of the the United States announced today it is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the neglect and abandonment of Herbie, a pit bull-type dog.
Herbie was found in Lorain, Ohio on December 2, 2012. He weighed only 25 pounds, a third of what his weight should have been. Herbie suffered from a fractured skull, his eyes were swollen shut, and he was so weak, he could not even stand on his own.
Herbie is now under the loving care of the Lorain Animal Clinic.
According to Dr. Thomas Wood of the Lorain Animal Clinic, Herbie has gained weight and currently weighs 47 pounds. He is now able to stand for a short time on his own, is able to take a few steps, even go outside for short periods of time. He still gets tired very easily. This little fighter went from being unable to swallow to being able to eat on his own.
Herbie has an appointment next Wednesday in Akron with an orthopedic surgeon. He may need an MRI of his skull. Dr. Woods states that Herbie sustained:
face fractures that will need to be surgically repaired, but Herbie is so weak and he is anemic from chronic starvation.
Since he is still so ill, Herbie will not be able to have surgery for at least another month, or until he is well enough to receive the anesthesia.
It is interesting to note that the wounds on Herbie were not recent, but according to Dr. Wood, the bruises were from weeks earlier, as was his skull fracture. It is not known if the injuries Herbie received were the result of being hit by a car or if someone starved then injured or even tried to kill him.
If you have any information on the person or persons responsible for neglecting, injuring, and/or abandoning Herbie, please contact the Lorain Police Department at (440) 204-2555.
Dr. Wood would also like to thank everyone who was involved in helping Herbie. It is appreciated that people from as far away as California, Texas and the United Kingdom have been following Herbie’s story and offering loving support, prayers and get well wishes.
If you would like to support Herbie, donations to help with his medical costs can be made to The Wood Foundation, which is a non-profit that cares for injured and abused animals. Please send donations to: The Wood Foundation, 4205 Oberlin Ave., Lorain, Ohio 44053.
Herbie also has a page on Facebook called “Justice for Herbie, the Abused Lorain, Ohio Dog”.
For additional updates on Herbie, please see the Lorain Animal Clinic’s website. An update on his condition from today, December 13, 2012 (like the photo also from today which is included in the slideshow above) brings a little bit of hope. It reads:
Herbie is outside enjoying the sunshine today. He has made several trips out and wags his tail each time!
What a good sign. And what an amazing dog.
