“Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 2” was released on November 16, 2012. With returning cast members including Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Ashley Greene, Dakota Fanning, Jackson Rathbone, Kellan Lutz, Nikki Reed, and Peter Facinelli, “Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 2” is the highest rated film in the Twilight series. The movie continues the story of Bella Swan, Edward Cullen and Jacob Black and brings the story to its conclusion… but it just doesn’t “sparkle.”
Based on the fourth book of the popular Twilight series by Mormon author Stephenie Meyer, the movie stays true to the book for the most part, but it does add some violence into the confrontation between the Cullen clan and the Volturi. There is also a sex scene between Edward and Bella Cullen, who are not only married but both vampires now. It is fairly tastefully done, but the violence and the sex have me nixing this movie for young teens and children.
Twilight remains an entertaining morality play, and once again the theme of rising above baser nature and desire is emphasized. As a “newborn” vampire, Bella should be driven by bloodlust, but like Carlisle and Rosemary before her, she is able to turn away from the more appealing human blood in favor of a less desirable convenient mountain lion as the rest of the vampires in the Cullen clan eventually learn to do.
The battle between the Cullens and the Volturi is a battle over the life of a child. Bella risked her own life to carry her baby to full term, a very pro-life statement, and the Cullens are able to partially redeem their guilt-by-silence when they let the Volturi killed Bree Tanner by banding together to save Renesmee.
“Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 2” has some good points, but overall, it simply ties up loose ends.
