As usual, once the weather turns cold, it’s harder and harder to find fitness events in the Treasure Valley. As you can see by the frost covering the morning ground and your breath in the air, we’ve finally reached that stage. But don’t worry, there are still a few great events coming up next month to keep you active. And if you like to plan ahead, and perhaps give yourself a goal for kicking off 2013 with a healthy attitude, there’s an event listed for New Year’s Day as well. Here’s a list to help you get started.
Saturday, December 8
Holiday Dodgeball Challenge Head to the Homecourt YMCA in Meridian for a tournament like no other. It features six player co-ed teams, prizes for best costumes, and more. For more information, click on this link.
Saturday, December 22
YMCA Christmas Run Open to all ages, this Boise tradition is a 2.5 mile run/walk, or 6.1 mile run. The 2.5 mile loop course is all flat, and winds through Boise’s North End. The 6.1 mile run starts and finishes outside the YMCA on Washington St. and 10th, and features 1 1/2 mile uphill portion as well as a half-mile steep downhill portion, either on gravel or snow, depending on the weather. For more information, click on this link.
Saturday, December 29
Hot Chocolate Run This event features a half-mile kids’ run, and a timed 5K. It starts and finishes at Reid Merrill Park. And at the end, you get hot chocolate in a custom mug that’s yours to keep. You can even add different toppings and flavorings as a reward for your hard work. For more information, click on this link.
Tuesday, January 1
Great Polar Bear Challenge This annual fundraiser for the Make-A-Wish Foundation encourages folks to raise funds and then take the plunge into the icy waters of Lucky Peak. It’s a crazy way to kick off the New Year, but it’s all for a good cause. For more information, click on this link.
