Reality television is like rubbernecking. You don’t want to look but can’t tear your eyes away. There was plenty of scandals in 2012 to keep viewers watching. Check out these top reality show scandals of the year.
Teen Mom star Amber Portwood, 22, had a very bad year in 2012. Portwood was initially sentenced to five years in prison for a drug arrest in December 2011.
However, she was given the opportunity to go through a court ordered drug rehabilitation program in order to avoid spending time in jail. Amber Portwood chose to give up the rehab program and is now serving out her prison sentence.
This year, Hulk Hogan’s long rumored sex tape finally came to light. The wrestler’s videotaped romp in the sack with his best friends wife, Heather Clem was released by a disgruntled employee of Bubba the Love Sponge.
Bubba was Hogan’s best friend and husband to Heather Clem. At the time the sex tape was filmed, Hogan was still married to ex-wife Linda Hogan.
Real Housewives of New Jersey had its own little scandal this year when Teresa Giudice arranged an embarrassing moment for sister-in-law, Melissa Gorga. A man who was supposedly Gorga’s boss when she was an alleged “stripper” called her out at the annual Poshe fashion show.
Giudice vehemently denied that she had anything to do with the set up however, friend Kim D, the owner of Poshe let the cat out of the bag. During the reunion show, Kim D revealed that she was the one who set up Gorga but that Teresa knew about it in advance and had a hand in it. Shame on you Teresa!
CBS’s The Amazing Race dealt with a sad controversy when Jeff Rice, one of the show’s producers died on a hotel balcony in Uganda. The Ugandan police spokesman, Asuman Mugenyi revealed that Rice’s death was a result of “bad cocaine.” The cocaine was mixed with lethal additives. Rice’s assistant Kathryne Fuller had also used the tainted drug leading to a fight for her life in the hospital. Fuller is now confined to a wheelchair as the drug caused her to be paralyzed on her right side.
A&E’s Storage Wars was outed as a “fake” show when fired star Dave Hester made allegations that the show “salts” the lockers with valuables to make the show more interesting. Hester claims he was fired when he questioned the legality of salting the storage units. A&E has denied the salting, however other stars of the show have stated that the lockers are salted but they don’t care.
