Six Tiger-Cats were named CFL East Division all-stars at seven positions on Thursday, three on offense, one on defense and three on special teams.
Running back Avon Cobourne, offensive lineman Peter Dyakowski and receiver Chris Williams were named offensive all-stars; linebacker Rey Williams was Hamilton’s lone defensive all-star; and the Ticats swept the special teams positions with kicker Luca Congi, punter Josh Bartel and returnman Chris Williams being named.
Cobourne started the year selling insurance in Florida before an injury to Martell Mallett led to Cobourne’s return to the Tiger-Cats in June. He was a healthy scratch for the first part of the season, but an injury to Chevon Walker brought Cobourne into the lineup and he produced from the get go. Cobourne finished the year sixth in rushing with 737 yards and a healthy 5.9 yards per carry average. He also chipped in with 337 yards on 32 receptions and reached the end zone a total of four times.
Dyakowski missed the end of the season, but was a key cog on an offensive line that helped the Ticats led the league in scoring.
Williams led the Ticats in receptions, yards and touchdowns, setting a new single-season record for touchdowns. He was also extraordinary on special teams, where he set a new league record for return touchdowns in a season. Earlier this week, Williams was named the East Division nominee for the Most Outstanding Special Teams Player award.
Rey Williams led the team in tackles with 95, which was also an East Division high, while also picking up three sacks and an interception in 2012. Williams has been named an East Division all-star in both of his seasons in Hamilton.
Congi had one of the best seasons a kicker could have, connecting on 88.9 per cent of 40 of 45 field goal attempts and leading the division in scoring with 171 points. Congi was named the league’s special teams player of the month for September.
Bartel had a very good first year in Hamilton, and was named the team’s top rookie, by punting for an average of 42.8 yards per punt.
This is the third all-star selection for Cobourne, the second for Rey Williams and Chris Williams, and the first for Congi, Bartel and Dyakowski.
