If you’re visiting Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort, or SeaWorld Orlando from out of state, or even out of the country, you might rent a car in Orlando to move more easily between the parks. You also need a rental car if you stay at an offsite hotel like the Gaylord Palms Resort or a house like All-Star Vacation Homes.
Hopefully you have a cell phone with a camera because there are three important things you’ll need to use it for when dealing with a rental car:
1) Take photos of the rental car before you drive it off the rental company lot. Sometimes rental cars have pre-existing damage, and if you don’t document it, the company might try to make you pay for it when you return the car. Walk around the car with the rental agent and make sure any existing problems are documented on your paperwork, and cover yourself even more thoroughly with cell phone photos. If possible, text or email the photos back to yourself to prove the date on which they were taken.
Don’t delete the photos when you get home from your vacation. Rental car companies have been known to come after people weeks, or even months, after their trip.
2) Take a photo of your car in its parking spot at the theme park, and take one of the section and row markers. It’s very easy to forget where you left your car in the enormous parking lots at Walt Disney World and the other attractions. Universal Orlando Resort even has two parking garages, so you’ll never find your car if you accidentally go to the wrong one. A simple photo saves you the hassle of hiking for what seems like miles in a futile search.
3) Take photos immediately if you get involved in an accident. Most vacations are accident free, but sometimes you find yourself in a fender bender, or possibly worse. Obviously the first thing to do is to make sure everyone is okay and notify the authorities Once they’re on their way, take photos of the accident scenes, the involved vehicles, and anything else that could be important later. This documents the extent of the damage and might even help determine who was at fault, depending on the position of the cars, traffic signs, etc. Taking photos of the other party’s driver’s license, insurance card, and license plate prevent the possibility of transposing numbers or letters when writing down the information.
These three suggestions are simple, and you might never need the photos. However, if you do, they could be invaluable.
