The 46th annual CMA Awards were held at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on Thursday night, November 1, 2012. Country music’s biggest night was stamped with the biggest names in country music such as Brad Paisley, Blake Shelton, Jason Aldean, Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert and Taylor Swift among others.
One country music act that is making a bigger and bigger name for themselves all the time is Thompson Square. After the mega success of their second single, Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not, Thompson Square went on to win three American Country Awards, an ACM award and a CMT award as well as earn a Grammy nomination for their hit song.
Thompson Square’s subsequent releases, I Got You and Glass, both landed in Billboard’s Top 20 and drew in even more fans for the blossoming new country music duo. In September, Keifer and Shawna Thompson learned that they’d been nominated for CMA Vocal Duo of the Year and on Thursday night, they claimed that award.
The CMA award for Thompson Square is a huge win, marking the first time any duo has overtaken Sugarland since 2007. Granted, Sugarland has had a rocky year, and since Jennifer Nettles is expecting, many future plans were up in the air. However, even if Sugarland was up to their normal performing schedule, Thompson Square has shown signs all along of being the couple who might actually change the Vocal Duo awards dynamic. Having now claimed both the ACM and CMA Awards for best vocal duo, Thompson Square has proven they have what it takes to succeed.
In her acceptance speech, Shawna Thompson was as humble as ever, saying, “Thank you first and foremost to the big man upstairs.” When she continued, she conjured up a sweet picture from her childhood, telling the audience, “I used to practice with my memaw’s mason jars for this very moment.”
When it was Keifer Thompson’s turn to speak, he said, “This is the coolest thing we’ve ever experienced.” Then, looking to his wife with love, added, “Being able to do it with your best friend-awesome!”
The couple’s obvious love for each other undoubtedly endears them to fans even more. Their sweet charm in addition to catchy, beautiful and thought-provoking music has
proven to be a great formula for success. It will be interesting to see if Thompson Square emerges as a consistent force in the Vocal Duo category or if they will be challenged by up and coming pairs such as Love and Theft or Florida Georgia Line.
Whatever the future holds, Thompson Square will always be able to look back on 2012 and their first taste of a CMA win with a great sense of accomplishment.
Congratulations, Thompson Square on a well-deserved win!
