Eight future superstar acts took to the X Factor stage to make their mentors: Simon Cowell, L.A. Reid, Demi Lovato and Britney Spears proud and to gain votes from America. So who rose to the occasion? Who received strong remarks from the judges and which act(s) might be singing off in tomorrow’s result show? Read on to find out….
This week, the eight remaining finalists performed songs that reached number one on the music charts. The first act to hit the stage was Diamond White, who tackled the legendary Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody.” The 13-year-old showed off some strong high notes throughout the song and had fun performing the 80s classic. L.A. gave her an “A” for effort but a “B” for execution while Simon was impressed with the fact that she was gunning for the number one spot in the ranking.
Last week, Vino Alan gave a moving tribute to the troops with a cover of “God Bless the U.S.A.” that received a standing ovation and strong feedback from all of the judges. This week, L.A pushed Vino to the limit this week when the music mogul almost changed songs at the last minute after he was not feeling Vino’s cover of the Righteous Brothers’ “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’.” Britney and Demi stated that they were not entertained and Simon added that Vino’s performance was not worth a $5,000,000 recording contract.
Arizona single mom Paige Thomas wanted to move around and have dancers but Demi stated that Paige does better without a huge production number and being vulnerable. Paige did not listen to Demi’s advice and delivered a strong but risky version of “Never Gonna Give You Up” that had excellent vocals and it looked like she was having fun on stage. L.A. stated that it was her best performance while Simon stated that it was the first time that she looked and sounded like a star.
The Fifth Harmony girls received a blow this week when they learned that Ally’s beloved grandfather passed away. While a visible shaken Ally still performed with the group, Fifth Harmony’s cover of Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger” that showed that the girls could sing in unison but like L.A. stated in his critique, the song did not offer an original arrangement and it was good but not groundbreaking. However, Britney stated that their cover of “Stronger” was a good fit for the group.
Last week’s number one act: Carly Rose Sonenclar was assigned to sing one of the world’s biggest songs: Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep.” Carly showed off impeccable vocal runs throughout the song and that showed off her sultry side. While L.A. stated that it was not one of her best performances, Demi and Simon gave her strong reviews and the latter “threatened” to disqualify her from the competition because she was an alien.
Belton, Missouri native Tate Stevens and L.A. Reid plotted to steal the number one spot back from Carly Rose with an Keith Urban hit: “Somebody Like You” which rocked the house and made his wife smile. Britney stated that they were going to see Tate accept a Country Music Award in the future and Demi stated that Tate’s performance made her feel like she was at home in Texas. However, Simon stated that he should stop dancing and keep singing.
In her pre-performance package, CeCe vented to her family that she is tired of being at the bottom and vowed to Demi that she will work hard to get her back out of the Bottom Two. She tackled one of her most ambitious songs yet: “Lady Marmalade.” It was a mixed performance but she needed to have backup performance from Christina, P!nk and Mya. Simon even stated that there was too much action and advised her to pack a suitcase.
Emblem3 closed the night with a cringe-worthy cover of Smash Mouth’s “I’m A Believer.” This song did not make me a believer of them and the performance was all over the place. During the judges’ comments, L.A. stated that they had the X Factor but Britney and Demi disliked the performance and added that they lost their spark. My advice to Emblem3 would be to pack their bags before tomorrow night’s elimination show.
Here’s how I graded the acts:
- Diamond White: A-
- Vino Alan: C
- Paige Thomas: A-
- Fifth Harmony: C+
- Carly Rose Sonenclar: A
- Tate Stevens: A
- CeCe Frey: B-
- Emblem3: D+
Tomorrow night, Alicia Keys and Josh Krajcik will provide the night’s entertainment and two more acts will be eliminated from the competition.
