It seems like this season the “X Factor” went a little overboard with double-eliminations, in fact every week except for one has featured two acts leaving the competition. Tonight was no different as the series said goodbye to another two of its stars and named its four semi-finalists. So which contestants landed in which position? Here’s how the night went down…
Following a recap of last night’s performances and a (seizure inducing) performance by last year’s talented winner Melanie Amaro, hosts Mario Lopez and Khloe Karsdashian Odom prepared for the night’s first elimination. As always, it’s important to remember that contestants are actually even more in danger during double elimination weeks simply because there is no mentor safety net. The lowest polling act goes home without the chance to sing for their survival.
Tonight, CeCe Frey was revealed to have polled the lowest and became the first of the night’s two departing acts. Frey’s elimination also means the end of the “young adult” category for the year as mentor Demi Lovato has now lost all three of her performers.
Immediately following the break, Lopez and Odom then revealed Emblem3, Carly Rose Sonenclar and Tate Stevens had all advanced to the finals, leaving Fifth Harmony and Diamond White to battle it out for the fourth and final slot.
During the “save me” songs, Fifth Harmony took the stage first, despite an attempt by their mentor Simon Cowell to make White lead off. The group was able to once again prove they could actually live up to their name, but at this point it looks like it’s a little too late to convince the voting public. Individually the five young ladies are each strong performers and they clearly seem to have bonded as friends, they just really didn’t ever seem to truly come together a group.
Diamond White on the other hand came out confident, poised and determined to stay in this competition, which is exactly why it’s shocking to see her be the one going home. While of course Britney Spears and Simon Cowell stood by their acts, it fell to Demi Lovato and L.A. Reid to cast the deciding votes. In the end, both voted to keep Fifth Harmony and eliminate White.
Ever the classy young lady though, White calmly thanked the judges for the opportunity and reminded everyone that UK pop star Cher Lloyd came in fifth on the British version and she’s become one of 2012’s biggest breakout artists. White was one of the show’s most promising contestants and it seems fairly safe to say tonight is not the last time you’ll see her perform.
Looking at the overall results, the order for this latest week of competition was as follows:
1. Tate Stevens
2. Carly Rose Sonenclar
4. Fifth Harmony
The most obvious takeaway here is the re-emergence of Tate Stevens as the top dog in the competition. Given Vino Alan’s shocking exit last week, it’s clear his fans have now become part of Tate-nation. However the exits of CeCe Frey and Diamond White could mean another shift next week as Carly Rose could easily pick up those votes. Yet Tate has always watched out for CeCe in the competition so it’s entirely possible her fans jump over to him.
Regardless, as we’ve known for a while this season will probably come down to the teenager and the cowboy, but next week could be incredibly interesting to watch as Cowell will likely have to choose between Emblem3 and Fifth Harmony for that third finalist slot. If nothing else, the thought of watching Simon squirm on live TV should make for some fascinating TV.
That’s a wrap for tonight, but make sure to tune back in next Wednesday night (locally on FOX 5 NY) at 8 p.m. EST to see the Top 4 perform.
