Imagine if you will, you are prowling about in a “haunted” location with a group of folks of like mindset. You have heard the stories of the location…the adrenalin is flowing…the group is nervous with anticipation, and as the hours pass in the dark, the mind becomes sluggish and the eyes heavy and burning from being on high alert and lack of sleep. Can you really trust your senses at this point? Then suddenly you are wide awake and on edge. You feel a jolt! You have heard an audible voice, clear and precise. You look around at your fellow investigators, but there is zero reaction. No one else heard it. Have you imagined it or was it meant for you and you alone?
Or, is there something else going on?
As with most things in this life—and death—there are always “other” possibilities.
Our user friendly government has toyed with some freaky experimentation over the years—all in the comforting name of national security and battle superiority. They still are, and that won’t end anytime in the near future. Those in the know are never going to pat the couch seat beside them, put a secure arm around your shoulders, and soothingly coo “Hey citizen, let me fill you in on what we are doing.” Not going to happen. Uncle Sam is a distant relative and will continue to keep that distance. After all, it’s for our own good. We can’t handle the truth.
It’s a quandary of government experimentation and exploitation—producing government thugs seriously lacking in the patience department…dressed in black, wearing Ray Bans and stiff leather shoes, tooling black Suburban’s and crisscrossing the country jabbering like migrant workers in search of the American Dream.
The game of war has gone far beyond bullets and bombs. There are now a surge of “non-lethal” focused energy weapons with the sole purpose of targeting and incapacitating the enemy without loss of life, or at least minimal bloodshed. And hey…if it will work on the battlefield, why not experiment on that unruly crowd of demonstrators back home in any city in the nation? It’s all in the name of peace and security, and a politically correct way of taking care of business.
However, experimentation in a laboratory setting is one thing…putting it to actual use in the field can be quite another. And there are those pesky secrets to deal with!
Sound has always been a successful teeth grinding deterrent in the business of war, and a psychological axe to the head to boot. Picture a fleet of thundering Huey helicopters gliding at tree level in Vietnam, blaring speakers at high volume the Rolling Stone’s Paint it Black into the thick jungle canopy. This probably caused nightmares for many years for North Vietnamese soldiers and local residents who cursed America and Mick Jagger. Scary stuff, and a basic entry into physiological warfare.
Still under development, and feverish re-tinkering, is the ADS (Active Denial System), and almost appears to be the stuff of the cheap science fiction movies of the 1950s. It has also been affectionately renamed the “Death Ray.” The ADS radar dish projects a searchlight sized beam of energy having a range of roughly 500 meters, and when directed at people produces a burning sensation. When one’s skin feels like its on fire it might just be time to set down the weapon and go home. At least that’s the military intention.
“Officially” the ADS deployment into actual battle is on standby due to potential negative public perception about the lethal ramifications of using this technology. After all, a bullet or high ballistic explosive is a much cleaner, humane kill. During the development phase has the ADS ray of fire been tested on human subjects? You betcha, and without a doubt the testing continues despite the so called hold. As with most government developments which are good for us–secrecy is king! Take good care of us Father, but don’t tell us any of the ugly truths. I may not be able to sleep at night!
For years sounds have been used in the form of various blasts and screeching to unnerve and disorient enemy soldiers on the field. Add to that a light display and you have a real party! Sonic Blaster technology delivers a deafening and blinding combination of sound and light. A laser basically ignites the air in front of a person, creating a mid-air plasma ball. Curt Graber, president of the developing company Wattre Corporation, explains: The combined effect is a psycho-acoustical event!
David Hambling wrote of the weapon for New Scientist:
The device uses a technology known as dynamic pulse detonation (DPD). A short but intense laser pulse creates a ball of plasma, and a second laser pulse generates a supersonic shockwave within the plasma to generate a bright flash and a loud bang.
An intriguing marriage when outsource companies work hand in hand with our government in producing a range of non-lethal weaponry. The entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well, and surges forward like a raging bull.
So…what does this all have to do with the original premise of hearing that audible voice in a haunted location; a voice that no one seems to hear but you? I feel we need to take a look at where we have been as related to technological development… where we are going…and where we are presently. In the paranormal field we embrace possibilities…it’s what we do. Nothing is ever a given…there are no experts that have all the answers. We need to look at all possibilities, no matter how obscure. It may just cause us to draw different conclusions—no matter how uncomfortable.
LRAD (Long Range Acoustic Device) is a “weapon” that can do double duty. Its initial purpose was to transmit noise loud enough to make people flee like rats from a flood. Currently, in its development incarnation, it can transmit the Voice of God! In laymen’s terms LRAD is a focused beam of sound, having the capability of projecting voices into your head. The war on terror meeting the entrepreneurial spirit head on with a dazzle!
Just whose voice, and for what purpose?
Several years ago (2007) an advertising firm decided to tinker, and used a LRAD unit in a media campaign for a new A & E show—Paranormal State. Emitted from a billboard high above the crowded sidewalks of New York City’s Greenwich Village, a female voice uttered teaser lines from the new show. As passerby’s moved along the sidewalk individuals were targeted by a beam of ultrasound which transformed into audible words as it made its way through the air and the ground below. Reaching its target, the words resonated, not in the ears of the beholder, but in their heads!
I would imagine this left many of the hapless test subjects confused and jabbering like frantic chickens in a barnyard…quickly heading for local bars in the middle of the afternoon in a highly imagined schizophrenic state of mind.
It was a potent demonstration of the state of technology, and how things can be not as they seem… or, as you imagine. Deception is suddenly as easy as snapping your fingers and the line begins to blur. Are those voices in your head a result of departed souls still longing for communication, or is there something else going on? It’s an alternative that needs some consideration. After all, the paranormal field is all about the alternatives!
Next: More exploration into just what makes LRAD tick, and those voices in your head.
