The Venetian is an artist who grew up in Italy and moved to Los Angeles. He discusses his style, his performances
When people ask you about your music, how do you describe it to them?
It’s rock opera. The rock sounds like The Beatles, Queen, Muse, mixed with Pavarotti-style opera. In the first album we did, which is a concept album, I sing some parts in Italian. It’s very theatrical.
How did you arrive at this style?
I always loved Queen and I always loved opera and I was trying to put together those types of music. I came out with this. Since I’m Italian, I was trying to put some Italian things in my music. The best thing I could come up with is opera parts where I sing in Italian.
The music is a product of where you come from and where you are?
Pretty much, yes. In Italy, I always loved English music. When I came here, I realized how much I was attached to Italian music. Opera was born in Italy and I decided to put the two things together.
How long have you lived in each place?
I came to L.A. six years ago. I started working on this project three years ago.
Take me through one of your shows from the preparation to the performance.
I decided to put some theater into my show, so I came out in costume. When we have a live show, we go to the place, we start putting the makeup and the costumes on. Then we try to perform the songs, rather than only sing the songs. We’re working now on a new show that we’re going to start performing in 2013. It’s going to be very theatrical. We’re going to try to mix musical elements of the show with elements that are like a regular rock band. Like Genesis, how they used to do it back in the day. We’ve been working on creating an experience people will remember. We want to make a real show.
You certainly are doing something different than most rock bands in L.A.
It’s so easy to go on stage with a t-shirt and jeans. If you really want to stand out, you want people to remember you in a good way. We want people to come to our shows and then come to see us again. It’s different than listening to the album in your car, with the lights and everything.
Why should I have your music in my collection?
Because it’s not common. There are a lot of common elements. In a way it’s like easy listening. Everybody loves The Beatles. Everybody loves Queen. There’s a lot of influences from these bands in my music. It’s not going to be something totally new, but the fact that we mix with Italian opera, that’s something you don’t want to miss. Especially here in the States, everybody loves Italian people and Italian music. It’s like having the best of both worlds.
What would you be doing if you weren’t making music?
I’m not sure. I think I would try to work in the entertainment business. I’m trying to tell stories and make things that people will remember. If I wasn’t making music, I’d probably be making movies. I love theater so much, so I want to express myself visually also. Expression is an important part of my life as an artist and I would probably do it anyway.
The first album from The Venetian (I Wanna Tell You a Story) is available on Bandcamp (you can name your own price). The band is also working on another album (and an accompanying new show) that will be available in the first half of 2013.
