The Thursday, Dec. 6 episode of “The Vampire Diaries,” season 4 episode 8, “We’ll Always Have Bourbon Street,” saw Stefan and Damon head to New Orleans for some answers, which triggered some flashbacks to 1942.
Is Elena sired to Damon? While Elena and Damon enjoyed their morning after, Stefan and Caroline were focused on trying to figure out what to do. Stefan presented their theory to Damon and suggested he just test it by telling Elena she could drink a blood bag and it would make him happy. And so Damon did, and it worked. This “Vampire Diaries” episode proved the sire bond was real.
But can they break the sire bond? While Tyler didn’t have any answers since it was different for hybrids and vampires, Damon had had someone sired to him before—Charlotte in 1942, New Orleans. When he had to make a clean break, he found a witch, Valerie, to break the sire bond. So they headed to New Orleans, where the brothers of course got into a disagreement over how the sire bond affected Elena’s feelings for Damon and the reason why Stefan wanted to break the bond (Damon said he just wanted to rest her to her Stefan-settings). However, when they separated, Stefan heard Damon get attacked—or so he thought. It was Charlotte, who kissed him. He had told her to count every brick in New Orleans and he’d meet her. Of course he didn’t, but as she revealed, she had counted every brick and knew he’d come back for her. Uh-oh.
Since Charlotte knew New Orleans better than anyone else, they hoped she could help them find Val. They needed 12 human souls for the spell, but her great-granddaughter didn’t practice magic. There was no one and the spell was gone in the destruction of Katrina. Damon killed the 12 people in 1942 and would do it again. He knew that the witch was Val’s daughter, not her granddaughter, and was practicing. She said what her mother practiced was unnatural. It was worse than black magic. It gave her access to dark power. The bond couldn’t be broken. A vampire only was sired to a vampire if they had human feelings before they were turned. The only way around it was to set her free, tell her to live her life without him and never think of him again, and leave her. That was exactly what Damon did…with Charlotte.
Let’s go back to 1942 with the boys and Lexi. We absolutely loved Lexi coaching Stefan through his apology to Damon before they joined him at the bar. Stefan had turned his life around and was going off to war, where he could learn the balance and restraint he needed to. Though Damon wanted to go with him and said he could spend some quality time with his brother, Lexi told him he wasn’t going with him once they were alone. She argued that Stefan was better off without him.
Doing the selfless thing. While Damon was able to let Caroline go, Stefan didn’t think he would be able to do it when it came to Elena since selflessness wasn’t exactly one of his traits. But he could do the selfless thing and did when it came to Stefan back in 1942. Damon was all set to head out with Stefan overseas, but Lexi found him and knew about the 12 people he killed for the witch. If Stefan found out, it could ultimately lead to Ripper Stefan again. Damon argued that he had been alone since the brothers’ falling out: “Did you ever think that I just need my little brother?” Lexi told him he needed to let him go. And he did. In the present, Stefan didn’t think Damon would be able to do it when it came to Elena since selflessness wasn’t exactly one of his traits. Stefan pointed out that even if Elena never felt the same way about him as she did, it would still be his choice. Damon knew what he had to do.
Tyler’s mission and Hayley’s secret. Kim stopped Tyler and Hayley from making Adrian keep turning, but Shane would only give Hayley information on her biological parents for 12 unsired hybrids—and they only had 11. She told Tyler to take his position as Alpha and put Kim in her place, and he did, but Kim was ready for a fight.
Girls’ night in at the Salvatores’… Elena had Caroline and Bonnie over and told them she could drink from blood bags thanks to Damon. When things got tense, the girls decided on no boy talk and that Caroline wouldn’t be judgmental for the evening. Bonnie brought out “spirit tea” and explained Shane was helping her do natural magic without having to access the spirits. The girls did have fun dancing around and drinking, with Bonnie filming it on her phone. However, when Caroline brought up Damon’s slutty past, things got tense again. Elena revealed that she slept with him and she was happy. She told them she was falling in love with Damon, but Caroline blurted out that she was sired to him. Elena told them to leave, but then Kim and Adrian came in and attacked Elena and Caroline. Bonnie tried to use her magic, but Kim pointed out that one bite from a hybrid and Caroline would be dead. The hybrids left with Caroline.
…ends in violence. Elena called in Tyler, who explained that Kim was trying to prove she was alpha. Elena brought up Adrian’s bond to Klaus, but Tyler explained that the bond affected how you acted, not how you felt. They found Caroline chained up, and though Tyler argued that she was on their team, Kim said she was on his time, not hers—and more hybrids joined them. Tyler was able to take control of the situation once he got control of Kim and gave her no choice but to submit or die. It was a different side of Tyler, and honestly, we loved it. However, we are a bit concerned about what this means for how dark he could get if he needed to.
And this week’s ending scenes… Hayley told Shane he had his 12 hybrids with Adrian’s bond broken, and he told her her parents were dead. He knew where they were buried, and she could see them again. “We are the beginning,” he told her. Now aren’t those words familiar? As Stefan told Caroline that he thought Damon loved Elena as much as he did and couldn’t be selfish with her anymore, Elena told Damon that she knew about the sire bond. Since her feelings for him weren’t affected, she argued nothing had changed. He told her what would make him happy was knowing what she felt for him was real. He didn’t want to do it, but he had to do the right thing by her. She put his hand on her heart and touched his face, asking if it felt wrong. What will Damon do when it comes to Elena? Will he be selfless? We have to wait until next week.
