What did Elena and Stefan’s breakup mean for Damon? That was exactly what the Thursday, Nov. 29 episode of “The Vampire Diaries,” “My Brother’s Keeper,” addressed.
Team Salvatore. Sometimes, we just can’t help but want more scenes between the brothers because they’re so good, and this “Vampire Diaries” episode teased the possibility of just that with Damon offering to forget about everything and get drunk and brother bond with Stefan after he learned about the breakup. However, Stefan knew that it was the best day of his life and blew that off.
And as for Delena… Caroline wasn’t happy with Elena’s decision and remained firmly Team Stefan, but Elena told her that while she still loved Stefan, she couldn’t deny her feelings for Damon had become more intense. She was confused. She did tell Damon that he was the reason for the breakup, but it wasn’t until later on that they actually talked after she told Stefan to let go of the old Elena. She refused to let Jeremy lose his humanity for the cure.
The other love triangle. Klaus made Caroline make good of her promise for a date and escorted her to the pageant. To continue the façade they had put together, Tyler and Hayley went together. Caroline talked to Klaus about her concerns regarding Elena, and he said he was working on the cure. When she asked if he would take it, he replied, “Why would I want to cure myself of being the most powerful creature on the planet?” Tyler wasn’t exactly happy to see them laughing as Klaus read her Miss Mystic Falls application. He also listened in as Klaus told Caroline he once thought about being human, but Tyler told Hayley it was just B.S.
More Stefan and Caroline please? Stefan wasn’t doing well post-breakup, but he had Caroline firmly on his side, both as his “sober sponsor” and trying to knock some sense into Elena once she found out about her feelings for Damon. We loved Caroline’s obvious dislike towards Damon. Unsurprisingly, Stefan went to Caroline, who tried to comfort him. She made him promise not to stop looking for the cure.
Angry Stefan. While we have to admit we liked Ripper Stefan because Paul Wesley was so good, we also like angry Stefan. He saw how Elena had changed since becoming a vampire as even more of a reason to find the cure—and that meant finding (and making) more vampires for Jeremy to kill. He forced Jeremy to kill the new vampire he made.
We’re worried about Jeremy. Since being awoken as a hunter, Jeremy’s strength had increased, which was pretty cool, but of course there was a downside—and a major one—to it. He had nightmares of trying to kill Elena and woke up holding a knife and stake with the mark carved into it. And after Stefan made him kill a vampire, he refused to tell him how far the mark had grown and instead stabbed him with a stake. He strapped himself with weapons before going to the pageant. He told April that her father and the council were doing the right thing for the town and they died heroes. Elena followed him when she saw him, but he was waiting with a stake. All he could think about was killing vampires, and even though he didn’t want to hurt her, everything in him told him to put the stake in her. He cut his wrist, drawing her in with the blood, and when she tried to leave, he attacked. He stabbed her in the neck, and while Matt tried to intervene, it was Stefan who stopped Jeremy and helped Elena.
Who is Professor Shane? Strangely enough, Shane just happened to be a pageant judge, and Damon did ask him how he convinced Pastor Young to kill all those people. He didn’t get an answer. Damon took note when he saw him talking to Hayley, but Tyler said they didn’t know each other. When he asked her about it, she said she just met him and he was hot and smart. Shane told Damon that there was no other hunter. It wasn’t exactly easy to find one. Shane told him that what he was looking for was sealed with a spell only a certain kind of witch—a Bennett witch—could perform. That was why Bonnie needed to get back into magic.
Some other tidbits… Matt continued to be perfect and stepped in as April’s escort when Jeremy didn’t show up at the pageant. Matt also was moving in to keep an eye on Jeremy while Elena moved out…into the Salvatore’s house, essentially kicking Stefan out of his own house. That didn’t exactly seem fair…
And this episode’s cliffhangers… After Kim’s sire bond was broken, Hayley told Shane they had another one. They would talk about Tyler’s involvement after she broke the last one. We’re not at all surprised that they knew each other. When they talked, Elena admitted she wasn’t sure she was so good at being a vampire, but Damon said he’d never seen her more alive. After she told him she had wanted to dance with him at the pageant, he pulled her up for a dance. They kissed and ended up in bed together, but what was really going on there? Caroline realized that Damon has always been the magic solution whenever Elena had a problem. She realized that since Damon’s blood made her a vampire, she became sired to Damon. Whatever he said, she did.
