Doomsday plans for the United States of America include securing the President and other high-level officials so that key government agencies can continue to operate through command centers in a doomsday plane or in bunkers, as appropriate.
The Boeing E-4 Advanced Airborne Command Post (project name “Nightwatch”) is a modified 747 airborne ark operated by the United States Air Force (USAF).
Its technical name is E-4B.
If ground command centers in the United States fail or are attacked, Nightwatch would be immediately airborne. The doomsday plane remains on permanent high alert, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year and can be launched in minutes.
In the event of a catastrophic, worst-case scenario, Nightwatch, a thoroughly protected doomsday plane and mobile command post, would transport the President, the Secretary of Defense, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and other key personnel quickly out of danger. When the President boards an E-4, its call sign becomes “Air Force One.”
All E-4B aircraft can reach speeds up to 620 miles per hour and can remain in the air for days. In a test flight for endurance, the aircraft remained airborne and fully operational for 35.4 hours.
Nightwatch has state-of-the-art direct fire countermeasures and is fitted with thermo-radiation and electromagnetic pulse (EMP) shields. Its Technical Control area is its communications nerve center, and a trailing wire antenna (TWA) contains the aircraft’s five-mile long TWA reel, essential for communicating with ballistic missile submarines.
An elite armed-forces security team, which travels with Nightwatch, always leaves the plane first, strategically positioning themselves around the aircraft.
At one time, doomsday plans existed primarily for a nuclear attack by the then Soviet Union, but now terror attack, cyber attack, power-grid attack, and extraordinary natural disasters have been added to the list. However, much of the plane’s technology is straight out of the 1980s, which may be a good thing, as modern-day technology can be more susceptible to hacking or breaking than older technology.
In the case of an Armageddon-type scenario, Nightwatch, the doomsday plane, designed and manned by the best of the best, stands ready in the hope that it will never have to face the worst.
