Following in the footsteps of J.K. Rowling, Suzanne Collins, and Stephenie Meyer, Cassandra Clare has written a series of teen books that have taken the younger literary generation by storm. Despite the fact that The Mortal Instruments is a teen series, many adults have picked it up, becoming enamored with Clare’s alternate world where demons, vampires, and many others walk the Earth hidden from sight of the mundies – or mundane people. Shadowhunters – once humans that drank the blood of Azrael and became a race known as Nephilim – are the only thing that keeps the world safe from downworlders – every other supernatural species. Clare found a unique way to weave this story together. There are currently six books in the Mortal Instrument series, the first being, City of Bones.
“When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder — much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Clary knows she should call the police, but it’s hard to explain a murder when the body disappears into thin air and the murderers are invisible to everyone but Clary.
Equally startled by her ability to see them, the murderers explain themselves as Shadowhunters: a secret tribe of warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. Within twenty-four hours, Clary’s mother disappears and Clary herself is almost killed by a grotesque demon.
But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know…. “ (Cassandra Clare)
When word broke that City of Bones was going to be turned into a feature film, fans became ecstatic, scouring the net for any bit of information. Lily Collins as been cast to play the redheaded Clary who was sheltered from her Shadowhunter heritage, while Jamie Campbell Bower will be Jace Wayland – the troubled Shadowhunter who puts himself in the line of fire far too much for his loved ones liking. There are many well-known faces in this movie, as well as some fresh ones.
For those fans who have been tracking every second in anticipation of getting just a bit more information about the release of City of Bones, you will be happy to know that the first theatrical trailer has been released. It’s enough to leave every Mortal Instruments fan drooling over themselves and counting the agonizing days, hours, and minutes until the release of the movie in 2013.
