The sport of boxing was robbed of getting to see its best two fighters in history meet in the ring. Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson were from different eras so naturally it was never a realistic option for either fighter. However, every fight fan in the world would tell you they’d give an arm and a leg to see that historic match-up.
The vast majority of UFC fans today will tell you that Silva and Jones would be a modern day Ali and Tyson. The fighting styles don’t necessarily match-up the same but the fact remains Silva and Jones are #1 and #2 on almost everyone’s top 10 pound for pound list, similar to Ali and Tyson for boxing. Some other people would rank Georges St. Pierre in the top 2, but the way Silva has fought at Light Heavyweight shows only a super fight between him and Jones would make sense.
Of course the fans and Dana White want to see this fight happen, but why don’t the fighters? Anderson Silva has quite the legacy going for him with an undefeated record in the UFC, and the record for most title defenses in any weight class. Silva might not want to spoil that undefeated record for a fight with Jon Jones, that wont even have title implications involved. However Silva has stated, during an interview with SporTV, that so many people are talking about the fight he may consider a catch-weight bout if Jones accepts the money proposed to him.
Jon Jones seems to be more optimistic than Silva about this fight happening, but has also stated in an interview with Correio Braziliense that he doesn’t want to be the guy who beat Silva. Jones also stated he does not want to be the guy who lost to Silva either. Jones went on to say the fight can happen if things come to a conclusion. Jones does not need to beat Silva in order to become the greatest of all time. He could compete for another 15 years, never losing a fight, and by 2027 Jones will have surely shattered Silva’s record.
The fact remains that this fight would be of legendary status, and not only would each man get to see who the better fighter is, they would also get one heck of a payday. The good news for UFC fans is Dana White has vowed to make this mega fight happen, and isn’t going to be swayed by Jones and Silva’s opinion. The UFC president is positive that the amount of money each fighter would make will change their minds. If these two champions don’t meet in the octagon it will truly be a shame for the sport of MMA, as talent like theirs is too rare to not be shared with the world.
