While ABC, FOX and NBC have announced numerous changes to their midseason schedules, The CW is only making two!
Today, the network announced they have slated the intriguing mid-season series “Cult” into the Tuesday’s at 9 p.m. timeslot once held by “Emily Owens M.D.,” which comes a month after tabbing “The Carrie Dairies” to replace the retiring “Gossip Girl” on Mondays.
Due to the massive success of “Arrow” and the stability of “Beauty and the Beast,” The CW only had to make two real tweaks to its lineup for the new year and both perfectly fit the network’s target demos. The more risky of the two though is “Cult,” which stars Matt Davis (“The Vampire Diaries”) and Jessica Lucas (“Melrose Place”), who both incidentally have starred on a CW series in the past.
In “Cult” Davis plays Jeff, a journalist who is drawn into the mysterious real-life cult following surrounding a TV series that has a dangerously loyal fan base. After eventually becoming convinced that his flighty brother’s disappearance is tied to the show, Jeff teams up with one of the show’s production assets to investigate just what aspects of the series are fake and which may be surprisingly real! “Prison Break” star Robert Knepper co-stars as the charismatic star of the fictional show within a show.
“Cult” not only has a clever premise but it has a clever hook and will allow the network to position it as a social series. However, the show is serialized and will require viewers to tune in every week for the full experience, but all early indications are that it will be worth the ride.
While “Cult” may not seem like the best fit to partner with Rachel Bilson’s “Hart of Dixie” on Tuesday nights, it certainly can’t do worse than “Owens” which barely maintained a million viewers a week and consistently scored low in the all-important 18-49 demo.
“Cult” will play to a young version of the “Lost” crowd and has the potential to be a breakout hit if producers can sell viewers on the cool “creepy” nature of the series which figures to have one hell of a fun viral campaign tied to its launch.

“Cult” premieres February 19th on The CW.
