A Coupla Crackpot Crones are back in town, fresh from performing at La Mama Theater, as part of the 2012 New York Int’l. Fringe Festival. The Crones will present their latest sketch comedy and improvisation, Crones for the Holidays at Stage Werx in San Francisco for the last 3 weekends of the year – Dec. 15 – 30, 2012. In Crones for the Holidays, a lesbian Jew and a straight lapsed Christian invite the audience to join with them to celebrate the joys and oy-vays of Christmas, Chanukah, Solstice and the rumored Mayan Apocalypse. The Crones, Terry Baum and Carolyn Myers, offer a touch of mockery and blasphemy to balance the traditional piety and purchasing that overwhelm December.
Scenes include: “Bubbie and her Butch”, about a newly minted lesbian terrified to introduce her lover at her granddaughter’s Chanukah party; and “Crones Say No to Drones” in which two octogenarian activists plot an escape from their nursing home to attend a demonstration. In addition: Mary finally gets a chance to tell HER side of the story of the Virgin Birth; Theresa Thesaurus, the illustrious abecedarian, subversively deconstructs a pious Christmas carol; and the audience joins in a sing-along of new holiday songs destined to be classics, “Moishe the Green-Nosed Herring” and “The Twelve Days of Family Insults.”

Terry Baum, slightly world-renowned lesbian playwright, and Carolyn Myers, retired warrior princess of comedy, have been creating theater together and cracking audiences up for 40 years. They most recently brought A Coupla Crackppot Crones to the NY Int’l. Fringe Festival in August 2012. The NY media lauded them for: “an evening of honest humor” (nytheatre.com) by “A pair of very smart, very insightful and very funny ladies” -(East Villager).
Baum and Myers were members of Lilith, the renowned San Francisco women’s theater of the 70’s. They co-wrote Dos Lesbos, A Play by, for and About Perverts, which opened in Oakland in 1981, inspired the first anthology of plays by lesbians in 1985, and offended the Pope in an Italian production in Rome in 2000. Resurrected as A Coupla Crackpot Crones in 2008, they have since performed throughout the Bay Area, and in Oregon, NY and NM.
What is a Crackpot Crone? The great feminist philosopher Mary Daly, defines a Crone as “The Great Hag of History, long-lasting one, survivor of the perpetual witch craze of patriarchy.” In fairy tales, the Crone appears as a fairy godmother or an evil witch. But, however she chooses to interact with others, the Crone, who has survived the early stages of the human journey, has discovered depths of courage, strength, laughter and wisdom in herself. A Crackpot is a person who is eccentric, unrealistic or fanatical. Example: persons who have a combined 102 years of theatrical experience.
