THE COUNTER OFFER
Once upon a time, if you wanted a burger that deviated at all from the standard one on a menu, you had to memorize a cryptic series of phrases like “4 x 4,” “animal style,” or “flying dutchman.” Then you had to wait on a serpentine line through most of your lunch hour to get the burger from a venerable In N Out location.
But along came The Counter where all combinations are not only welcomed but encouraged.
There is a kaleidoscopic variety of permutations available, beginning with your protein – beef, turkey, chicken, or veggie patty. Building from that foundation, you have a choice of 11 kinds of cheese, 29 kinds of toppings, 23 kinds of sauces, and six kinds of buns. Or not – you can also get your burger and fixings in a lettuce bowl.
If the choices are too dizzying for you, you can opt for one of their signature burgers, though even here there a choice of six possibilities. Two examples of how a burger is transformed into a Counter burger are the Asian Veggie Burger and the Backyard Barbeque Burger. The Asian signature burger begins with a homemade veggie patty, then organic mixed greens, carrot strings, chopped red onion, grilled pineapple, roasted red pepper, scallion, ginger soy glaze and peanut sauce. If that Eastern-bent salad bowl of a burger is not tempting to you, you might want to swing the other way to the BBQ burger. The burger baristas begin your order with a patty protein of your choice, and then the build out continues with a lettuce blend, horseradish cheddar, black forest ham, chopped red onion, coleslaw, crispy onion strings, scallions, tomatoes, country buttermilk ranch and sweet bbq sauce. Like me, you can try to convince yourself that the veggies’ healthfulness counteract the fried onions, the salty ham, and the creamy coleslaw but your tastebuds — and your appetite — will quickly dissuade you of that pretense.
And lest you think you have saved a few carb calories by ordering a burger in a bowl instead of a bun, the Counter’s “Fifty-Fifty” offer of a combination of two of their fried sides – french fries, sweet potato fries, crispy onion strings – will beckon you with its salty crunchy deliciousness that most people find hard to resist. Rounding out the menu are sliders, desserts, sandwiches, salads, grilled vegetables, turkey chili, a kid’s menu, even a beer and wine bar!
These generous burger creations hover in the $10 range with a few premium sides costing extra. Worth every calorie and every penny. And with over 312,000 possible combinations to choose from, why would you have reason to get a burger anywhere else? You wouldn’t. Be Counter intuitive.
