In the year 2012, several stars from “The X Factor” had fashion styles that stood out from the crowd. Who were the best-dressed and the worst-dressed?
Here’s who is eligible to be this list and who isn’t: Stars from the U.K., U.S. and Australia editions of “The X Factor” are eligible to be on this list, since rootshed.com’s audience is mainly English-speaking. Also eligible to be on this list is anyone from these three shows who in 2012 was an “X Factor” contestant signed to a major label or an “X Factor” judge or host.
This list is based on what these stars wore in 2012, not just for public appearances but also how they dress in their private lives. This list isn’t just based on my personal opinion but also on how fashion critics have rated these celebrities.
“Best dressed” or “worst dressed” doesn’t just mean the type of clothes they wear but it also means how well-fitted and tailored the clothes are, the accessories worn with the clothes, and how well their personal grooming is to complement the clothes. A beautiful designer outfit is ruined if it’s wrinkly, dirty, the wrong size, or if the person wearing it has the wrong accessories or wrong hair for it.
The 10 Worst-Dressed “X Factor” Stars of 2012
1. Jesy Nelson of Little Mix (“The X Factor” U.K. 2011 winner)
Little Mix is an oddly dressed girl group that wears clothes that do not look cool in 2012 or in any other year, for that matter. They dress like they are wearing what ’80s pop stars threw away back in the ’80s. The worst-dressed offender of Little Mix in this regard is Jesy Nelson, who not only wears heinous-looking patterns and colors, but her chosen outfits also tend to be very unflattering to her curves. And if Little Mix had a contest to see which member can wear the ugliest shoes in public, then Nelson would win almost every time.
2. Tulisa Contostavlos (“The X Factor” U.K. judge)
She is known for having a down-to-earth personality and for overcoming a troubled past, but when it comes to her fashion choices, Tulisa Contostavlos should learn that “down to earth” does not have to mean “low-class.” Although she should be given some credit for changing her wardrobe a lot and taking risks, most of the time these changes and risks aren’t necessarily for the better. It’s a shame, really, since Contostavlos has the body to wear much more flattering clothes than the eyesores that she often chooses to wear.
3. Britney Spears (“The X Factor” U.S. judge)
On “The X Factor” U.S., Spears has an appropriate designer wardrobe chosen by stylists. But when she’s not on TV, how she dresses in her free time is a complete disaster. The best way to describe Spears when she dresses herself and styles her hair is “frumpy, tacky and messy.” No one expects her to wear dresses and high heels when she goes shopping or walks through an airport, but she has enough money to at least look decent and presentable in public, not look like a redneck on government assistance who looks too hung over to care about cleaning herself up when she goes out. Spears is so unkempt and sloppy in her free time that she often looks several years older than she really is.
4. Josh Krajcik (“The X Factor” U.S. second-place finalist in 2011)
We know Josh Krajcik is the type of artist who could care less about fashion. But would it kill him to look like he washed or combed his hair more often than once a week? And he seems to hate wearing clothes that are ironed. Even Bruce Springsteen, who has jeans and T-shirts as his fashion staple, wears his clothes with a certain sense of style. Krajcik just looks like a poor schlub who picks up people’s trash after an arena show instead of being a rock star who could headline at the arena.
5. Alexandra Burke (“The X Factor” U.K. winner in 2008)
Wrong. Just wrong. That is the best way to describe some of the trashy and sometimes laughable outfits that Alexandra Burke often wears in public. One of her biggest fashion mistakes that she makes repeatedly is wearing clothes (usually see-through tops) where people can clearly see her entire bra. Just because something has a designer label does not mean that it’s in good taste or flattering. Instead of over-paying for tacky designer clothes, Burke is better off investing in a new stylist’s help and a change of wardrobe. And she should really put whatever full-length mirrors she has to better use.
6. Khloe Kardashian (“The X Factor” U.S. co-host)
Khloe Kardashian’s horrible fashion choices include her tendency to wear clothes that look cheap and are too tight for her, thereby making her curves look very unflattering. She also made a very bad impression on a lot of “X Factor” viewers in her first “X Factor” episode, when she pulled a smarmy publicity stunt of wearing a low-cut, see-through blouse with no bra. Needless to say, many viewers were not impressed by her flashes of breast nipples on their TV screens. The Kardashian name is synonymous with “tacky,” so it’s no surprise that Khloe’s fashion style also fits that description.
7. Perrie Edwards of Little Mix (“The X Factor” U.K. winner in 2011)
Perrie Edwards may not wear as many loud and ugly clothes as her Little Mix group mate Jesy Nelson, but it’s still appalling what she often chooses to wear in public. Sometimes what Edwards wears isn’t so cringeworthy, but when she wears a bad outfit, it’s horrendous. Spandex pants need to stay in the ’80s. And no, headbands are not going to make a comeback. Even Olivia Newton-John in 1981 wouldn’t want those headbands that Edwards wears.
8. Melanie Brown (“The X Factor” Australia judge)
At the 2012 Olympics closing ceremony, Melanie Brown tried to be like Jennifer Lopez by wearing a skin-tight, glittery gold catsuit during the Spice Girls reunion performance, but unfortunately, Brown just looked a lot heavier than she really is. Then there’s Brown’s incessant need to show her cleavage and how much money she probably invested to enhance it. Unfortunately, her cleavage-baring outfits make her look she’s one of those pathetic women who hang out at casinos to pick up drunk, high-rolling gamblers. Scary Spice indeed.
9. Simon Cowell (“The X Factor” executive producer)
Simon Cowell is the first to admit that he hates fashion and shopping for new clothes. (He has an assistant do his clothes shopping for him.) So Cowell should not be surprised when he ends up on “worst dressed” lists. His fashion style consists of any of the following predictable choices: a blank T-shirt that is too tight (in white, black or grey); a white button-down shirt that is opened to show too much chest hair; trousers (usually blue jeans) that are too long; and/or a generic suit. Although Cowell does not wear wacky colors or patterns in his clothes and he does look presentable when he wears a suit, he’s on this worst-dressed list because it looks like he hasn’t bothered to change his wardrobe in about 20 years.
10. Melanie Amaro (“The X Factor” U.S. 2011 winner)
While most female pop singers try to look a lot younger than they are, Melanie Amaro’s dowdy and dull fashion choices make her look a lot older than she is. She’s on this worst-dressed list for that reason. And before she had a makeover in late 2012, many of the clothes she would wear in public were ill-fitting. Instead of looking like a fresh young diva in her early 20s, Amaro dresses like a middle-aged matron. Even though she changed her hair color to blonde and lost weight, it still did not solve Amaro’s problem of wearing clothes that age her in a very unflattering way.
