In the year 2012, several stars from “The X Factor” had fashion styles that stood out from the crowd. Who were the best-dressed and the worst-dressed?
Here’s who is eligible to be this list and who isn’t: Stars from the U.K., U.S. and Australia editions of “The X Factor” are eligible to be on this list, since rootshed.com’s audience is mainly English-speaking. Also eligible to be on this list is anyone from these three shows who in 2012 was an “X Factor” contestant signed to a major label or an “X Factor” judge or host.
This list is based on what these stars wore in 2012, not just for public appearances but also how they dress in their private lives. This list isn’t just based on my personal opinion but also on how fashion critics have rated these celebrities.
“Best dressed” or “worst dressed” doesn’t just mean the type of clothes they wear but it also means how well-fitted and tailored the clothes are, the accessories worn with the clothes, and how well their personal grooming is to complement the clothes. A beautiful designer outfit is ruined if it’s wrinkly, dirty, the wrong size, or if the person wearing it has the wrong accessories or wrong hair for it.
The 10 Best-Dressed “X Factor” Stars of 2012
1. Gary Barlow (“The X Factor” U.K. judge)
Simply put: Gary Barlow makes great taste look effortless and flawless. He wears well-fitted outfits that are flattering without being overbearing. He also doesn’t stick to just wearing black, dark blue, grey and white. He will take chances on pastel and bright colors. Barlow’s style of dressing makes him sexy yet accessible to his many fans. And according to The Sun, his hairstyle is among the U.K.’s most-requested by men who want a close-cropped haircut. In 2012, Barlow was given the Outstanding Achievement Award by GQ magazine’s U.K. edition for his Diamond Jubilee work and philanthropic activities. But his fashion sense could also be considered admirable.
2. Dermot O’Leary (“The X Factor” U.K. host)
Dermot O’Leary always dresses appropriately for the occasion, whether it’s a black-tie event or hanging out at backstage with “X Factor” contestants. It’s no wonder that O’Leary was named 2012’s Most Stylish Man of the Year by GQ magazine’s U.K. edition. O’Leary epitomizes the best of his preferred style of fashion: classic and comfortable.
3. Antonio “L.A.” Reid (“The X Factor” U.S. judge)
L.A. Reid may have quit “The X Factor” at the end of 2012, but whoever replaces him as an “X Factor” U.S. judge has a hard act to follow when it comes to being the most fashionable judge on the show. Reid likes to take fashion risks that most men won’t take, such as wearing bright red trousers or a pink shirt, but those risks work for him as both a music executive (he’s currently chairman/CEO of Epic Records) and as a Grammy-winning songwriter/producer who has helped make big stars out of Usher, Justin Bieber, Pink and Rihanna. Reid has got a traditional yet funky style that he makes completely his own. His style is a perfect reflection of the man himself: a balance of business and creative.
4. Rebecca Ferguson (“The X Factor” U.K. second-place finalist in 2010)
Rebecca Ferguson is no doubt influenced by 1960s fashion, but she puts her own modern spin on the clothes that she wears. With the exception of an unflattering sequined catsuit that she wore on “The X Factor” U.K. in October 2012, her style choices exude class and elegance. She stands out from other female pop singers who are desperate to shock or show body parts with the outfits that they wear. Off stage, she shows the same sense of style by refusing to wear the type of sloppy clothes that many female pop singers wear in public, such as ripped cut-off shorts or too-tiny cropped tops. Five years from now, many pop stars will look back and be embarrassed by the clothes they wore in public, but Ferguson will not have that problem.
5. Zayn Malik of One Direction (“The X Factor” U.K. third-place finalist in 2010)
One Direction’s Harry Styles may be the member of the group who gets the most attention from fans and the media, but Zayn Malik is by far the best dressed in One Direction. Malik has achieved the perfect balance between looking like a contemporary pop star without falling into a trap of being a trendy fashion victim. When One Direction gets dressed up, take a look at how well Malik’s suit fits compared to the rest of the group. One of his best fashion qualities is that he coordinates colors very well. And his varying hairstyles over the years have rarely missed the mark. And you will never see him walking through an airport in pajama wear and tangled hair, looking like he just rolled out of bed.
6. Marvin Humes of JLS (“The X Factor” U.K. second-place finalist in 2008)
In a group as good-looking as JLS is, Humes stands out for his classic style. Whether he’s wearing suits or casual clothes, he almost always looks like a male model, and he knows how to match his clothes well.
7. Leona Lewis (“The X Factor” U.K. winner in 2006)
In 2011, Leona Lewis would have been on “The X Factor” Worst-Dressed List for some of the embarrassing outfits that she wore in public. (She’d probably like to forget that awful cropped top shaped like lips that she wore in 2011 to the Los Angeles premiere of “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never.”) But she has redeemed herself in 2012, as she has vastly improved her fashion sense with gorgeous, well-fitted designer gowns and choosing flattering colors for her dressy and casual outfits. Her hair and makeup have also gotten better in 2012, compared to how she looked in 2011.
8. Ronan Keating (“The X Factor” Australia judge)
Boyzone star Ronan Keating is one of those men who can look great whether he’s wearing a designer tuxedo or showing off his tattoos in a leather-clad outfit. There aren’t too many male celebrities who can easily alternate between looking like a socialite and looking like a rock star without being a fashion victim, but Keating has this balance down perfectly.
9. Harry Styles of One Direction (“The X Factor” U.K. third-place finalist in 2010)
Whereas One Direction’s Zayn Malik has the look of an urban-influenced pop star with a bit of a tattooed edge, One Direction’s Styles is flying the flag for a classic preppy style with a modern twist. Styles’ famously tousled hair brings a “naughty school boy” vibe to his fashion sense, and he definitely knows how to rock a bow tie. He loses some points for sometimes wearing suits that could be fitted a little better, and he is sometimes seen in public wearing the same outfit two days in a row. He also relies a little too much on blazers for his fashion choices. But there’s no doubt that Styles is consistently one of the best-dressed guys in One Direction.
10. Nicole Scherzinger (“The X Factor” U.K. judge)
Nicole Scherzinger is a glamorous diva whose body is made for designer fashion. On stage, she brings plenty of sex appeal, but she loses some points because the wardrobe that she wears in concert still has a trashy Pussycat Dolls influence. Her off-stage fashion is where she really shines. Whether she’s looking bohemian in a ’70s-styled floppy hat, or wearing a stunning dress on “The X Factor” or at a movie premiere, or relaxing in a leather jacket and jeans, Scherzinger chooses clothes that are flattering to her best assets without being too revealing.
