A young woman attended the Thanksgiving family dinner at her girlfriend’s home. She ended up being savagely beaten by her girlfriend’s brother.
Mallory Owens’ girlfriend Alex Hawkins invited her to Thanksgiving dinner with her family. The trouble began with Hawkins’ teenage brother, Travis Hawkins, Jr., began expressing his hatred for their lesbian relationship.
Travis Hawkins, 19 savagely attacked Owens, 23 beating her so badly she was hospitalized because of her injuries. According to the authorities, Owens has a broken nose; both eyes are swollen shut, numerous lacerations and will require facial reconstruction surgery.
Owen’ mother, Kristi Taylor spoke with WKRG-TV regarding the attack. “He tried to kill her. He’s lucky he didn’t kill her. She’s lucky to be alive.”
“I didn’t recognize her when I got to the hospital. It’s hard to look at her like that. She was invited over by the family to eat Thanksgiving.”
“I did not want her to go. I begged her not to go, knowing how the family felt about her. But she said, ‘They’re trying to be nice’.” [sic]
Kristi Taylor went on to explain that this wasn’t the first assault Owens had suffered at the hands of Hawkins. Taylor claims that earlier in the year, Hawkins hit Owens in the head with a pipe wrench. Even though Mallory Owens was injured during the attack she wouldn’t press charges against him.
According to law enforcement officials, Travis Hawkins was arrested on Sunday and charged with second-degree assault. He was bonded out shortly after his arrest. Hawkins is due in court on December 10 for his arraignment.
District Attorney Ashley Rich released a statement regarding the investigation into Hawkins actions. “We’ve got this. We’re on top of this, and we’re making sure that the case is proceeding down the criminal path.”
“We are assessing her injuries, everything regarding her hospital stay. But at this time, he is charged with causing serious physical injuries to her, which is assault second degree under the laws of the State of Alabama.”
Mallory Owens’ family aren’t happy with the charges. They want the district attorney to charge Hawkins with attempted murder.
Owen’ sister Avery Godwin said the charges are enough for him and her sister deserves justice. “I want him behind bars for life. He doesn’t need to be out, because if he does he could do this to someone else or he’ll finish it off with my sister.”
Mallory Owens has since been released from the hospital. Surprisingly, she doesn’t believe the attack was a hate crime. Owens is still with her girlfriend, Ally Hawkins.
“I’m okay. I’m good, just a bad bad night. A lot of things have happened between us, but it doesn’t make me hate her brother. I don’t hate her family at all, or anybody for that matter.”
