For the vast majority of readers that’s all that would be needed. The rest of this review is for that percentage that doesn’t quite get it. For people who leave Youtube comments on this video like “what happened to the old Taylor?” and, this is a quote, “I don’t get the song what it it all about?” Here’s what it’s about:
When discussing ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’ Swift said “…it’s a song that’s one of my favorite songs on the album because it sounds just as chaotic as the feeling was when I wrote it. It’s a song about kind of being frustrated with yourself because you have your heart broken and you knew when you first saw that person you saw all these red flags and you just went for it anyway,” she explained. “So, shame on me.”
This is what she spends the opening minutes of the video explaining. She explains how she met a guy so charming, yet so dangerous. This guy knew she didn’t fully realize what she was getting into and took full advantage of it. The reason you’re seeing a new look for Taylor is because she’s changing herself for him. She’s losing who she really is so she can fit into his world.
The style of the song plays into this narrative as well. The verses are the upbeat, cheery sound we know her for. Then the chorus veers off into a different style for her. As she singing about this guy “taking me to places I’ve never been” we’re hearing her as she’s never sounded. The mix of styles is the chaotic sound she’s talking about in the quote above.
In the closing moments she sees this guy kissing another woman, that’s when she comes to her senses. “And the saddest fear comes creeping in, that you never loved me, or her, or anyone, or anything.” Only then does she realize she gave up so much for someone so not worth it. She finally can appreciate the person she really is.
This song and video work together to tell a story, and it gives Swift a chance to try something new. The result is a great video.
