The long and often heated controversy surrounding Texas monies from tax payers may finally be ending. The debate goes like this: Abby Johnson, former Director of a Planned Parenthood abortion center in Bryan, Texas publicly states “My supervisors encouraged me to advocate aggressively for abortions because that is where the money is at”. ( http://www.abbyjohnson.org/blog/page/5/) PP’s statements focus on breast cancer “services” where “Planned Parenthood doctors and nurses teach patients about breast care, connect patients to resources to help them get vital biopsies, ultrasounds, and mammograms” ( http://www.plannedparenthood.org/health-topics/womens-health/breast-canc… ) While actually offering only manual breast exams on site, Planned Parenthood continues to be connected to the Susan G. Komen foundation, who contribute $700,000 annually to PP. This part of the controversy is about the largest breast cancer research fund in America contributing almost a million dollars a year to the largest abortion provider in America. Planned Parenthood offers no mammograms, no biopsy’s, no diagnostics and no ultrasound at any of their sites,so in reality they basically just offer simple referrals and education on self exams. Well, ok then. Just so we are clear in spite of President Obama stating on the “Tonight Show” that Planned Parenthood provides mammograms AND cervical cancer screenings.

Adding up the numbers: Planned Parenthood receives about 46% of their budget funding from the Federal Government and from individual States. As the largest abortion business in America, they performed 329, 445 abortions in 2010. THIS is another heated piece of the debate in America over Planned Parenthood’s role in our culture, especially when so much tax payer money is given directly to them directly. In addition to 46 % of their budget being taken care of by the Federal Government and the States giving them tax dollars, there are also many cities that subsidize PP in a variety of ways. Austin, Texas uses tax dollars to offer PP a ten year city lease of $1 per year for a 3,720 sq.ft. building. The building is used for family planning consultation and client testing. The City of Austin requires PP to do the maintenance, the upkeep and in 2010 a sidewalk was required by the City from the bus stop to the facility entrance so that would not have to use the parking lot as a “path of travel” (http://www.austintexas.gov/department/city-council/2010/20100930-reg.htm)
According to the Planned Parenthood website, the cost of an abortion at a PP Center is between $300 and $950. They also state that in 2010, they performed 329,445 abortions. If the average cost is $500 then PP revenue just from abortions was $164,500,000.00 in 2010. Over 164 Million. If you then factor in that 46% of their total budget expense is funded by State and Federal tax money plus a totally unknown amount from cities like Austin, Texas where funding comes from subsidized leases worth huge amounts, the dollar amounts add up quickly. THEN if you add in the monies that Counties contribute in various ways, again with public tax money, Planned Parenthood’s income becomes enormous and so is the number of questions Americans are now asking.
Technology and an ever increasingly educated public: Americans are increasingly becoming “pro-life” partly due to ever increasing technological advances in medical science. When a couple decides to use in vrito fertilization, where the attempted fertilization of a large number of the woman’s eggs takes place, the couple is required to legally decide what they want to do with any fertilized eggs that they are not using at that time. The reason for that is that these fertilized eggs are then recognized as human embryo’s, meaning they are indeed tiny living human beings. There is no longer any debate about when life begins. It begins at conception. This simply fuels the fire of debate about tax dollars and abortion since abortion providers can no longer confuse a no longer uneducated public about what happens when an abortion takes place. People of faith have long denounced abortion as the taking of a human life. Real science and technology has now informed a nation that abortion is exactly that.
Planned Parenthood and the Girl Scouts The Planned Parenthood controversy doesn’t stop there. The growing connection with PP and the Girl Scouts of America has many people questioning the motives of the largest abortion company in America. Planned Parenthood put out a brochure entitled “Healthy, Happy and Hot.” This brochure was distributed to thousands and thousands of Girl Scouts. The intended audience is girls aged 8-16. A quote from it is noteworthy here: “Your skin is the largest erogenous zone on your body, and your mind plays a big role in your desire for sex and sexual pleasure. Caress and lick your partner’s skin. Explore your partner’s body with your hands and mouth. Mix things up by using different kinds of touch from very soft to hard. Talk about or act out your fantasies. Talk dirty to them. Tickle, tease and make them feel good.” Planned Parenthood allowed by the Girl Scouts to give a brochure with THIS in it (and there are plenty of others like it ) to 8-16 year old girls is indeed questionable…..to say the least.
Womens Health Program in Texas In 2011, State Legislators overwhelmingly passed a law prohibiting public tax dollars being given to abortion providers AND their affiliates. This made it illegal for Texas to give State tax dollars to Planned Parenthood and they immediately sued. At the same time, the Obama administration informed Texas that the Federal funding for the Women’s Health Program would be cut off unless PP was added back in. The Federal government annually gives Texas about 40 million dollars of public tax money to fund the Women’s Health Program. In light of the ongoing court case by PP and the threat of funding withdrawal from the Federal Government, Gov. Rick Perry and Attorney General Greg Abbott have determined that in order to comply with Texas law and still serve the thousands of low income women in need, the State of Texas will take on the funding for the entire program. Gov. Perry has also announced that 3000 NEW qualified medical health providers are identified and ready to replace the services that Planned Parenthood has been providing. Planned Parenthood represents less than 2 % of the providers and the amounts charged by PP are typically 43% above other providers.
The will of the people of Texas has certainly been clear. The Constitutional rights and obligations of the several States is clear. Texas law is clear and now has been upheld at the appellate level. That a massive amount of money, including a huge amount of Federal, State, County and City tax dollars is being pumped into Planned Parenthood is clear. What is not clear is the real message, motivation and goals of Planned Parenthood.
