You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and then you have: Lisa Welchel on Survivor this season (a “Facts of Life” reference I’m sure you haven’t heard yet…). In one of the season’s most entertaining episodes, last week the former TV Star Lisa showed that there may be a lot more to her than the “goody-two-shoes” persona that she established in her first few weeks in the game.
In tonight’s episode, we will probably find out if Lisa is persuaded more by the angel on her right, or the devil on her left. You can insert which one represents which group of contestants left in the game.
First, here is the synopsis from CBS:
Episode 9 – “Little Miss Perfect” – AN ORIGINAL ALLIANCE IS TESTED AND AN UNLIKELY FRIENDSHIP THREATENS TO SWAY THE GAME, ON “SURVIVOR: PHILIPPINES,” WEDNESDAY, NOV. 14. A priceless reward proves to be a life-changing experience for some Survivors, and an original alliance is tested while an unlikely friendship threatens to sway the game, on SURVIVOR: PHILIPPINES, Wednesday, Nov. 14 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.
Analysis. Well there is no hiding who is being referred to when it mentions “an original alliance is tested.” This either refers to Lisa and Skupin going against their Tandang alliance of Pete, Abi and Arits or it could possibly refer to Malcolm and Denise. The “unlikely friendship,” as previews suggest, may be between Lisa and Penner.
It’s clear that there will be fall-out from the monumental Tribal Council that saw Jeff get his torch snuffed. Malcolm and Denise specifically, voted for Pete to leave the game and I’m sure this isn’t going to sit well. Malcolm and Denise may also find some animosity towards Skupin and Lisa, whom they trusted in the last vote as well.
Lost in all of this is Penner, who still doesn’t seem to have any real allies. Probst even clarified this week in an interview with EW’s Dalton Ross, about his comments about the “biggest blown opportunity” ever in the game. He was talking to Penner, for his inability to rally together a group of people at Tribal. Penner – a man without a real alliance – had a golden opportunity to solidify with Jeff and former Kalabaw, but instead now still seems to be an army of one. Should Penner lose immunity, he could be the easy vote out and the common ground found between all other alliances.
On the flip-side, Penner could just have dodged the most critical bullet of all. Now with everything out in the open – including the knowledge of both Abi and Malcolm’s Immunity Idols – Penner could be a potential swing vote. It seems to me that unless Pete and Malcolm make up (unlikely), power suddenly seems to be on Penner’s side. If you consider that Malcolm and Denise are in need of numbers, they may have to look no further than Penner and Carter as temporary allies. Four isn’t enough though, which really means that everything points back to Lisa…and Skupin as to who really possesses control.
Skupin has been somewhat of an enigma when it comes to his true allegiances. But his vote tonight will be crucial. The most exciting part is that no current alliance has the number to split votes anymore. So if somebody is voted out and an Idol is played, they can’t really predict where that vote will be deflected. Will Abi and/or Malcolm use their Idols to save themselves? Or will they be used strategically on a teammate in order to regain power? Or not at all?
Last week was exciting, but there is still so much more seemingly ahead of us in what could go down as a very exciting final stretch of episodes. That my friends, is very refreshing, as the last few years have seen predictable Tribal Councils nearing Finale. The most interesting of scenarios is if Abi or Malcolm wins the next Immunity, to see what they do – if anything – with their hidden Idols. The next vote, who has Immunity and where the votes fall tonight could very well be the determining factor in who reaches the Final 3 this season.
If Penner doesn’t win his second consecutive Immunity tonight though, I have a bad feeling about his chances. Then again, I thought Zane would be a good player this season.
