Don’t let the name fool you, “Street Fighter X Mega Man” isn’t a fighting game crossover. Instead, this crossover created by fans of Capcom resembles a traditional “Mega Man” game. As a PC game, “Street Fighter X Mega Man” has keyboard controls, and this is perhaps the biggest obstacle to overcome when trying to enjoy the game.
Having to control Mega Man as he runs through various stages with the keyboard takes a bit of getting used to, and can be a bit disastrous at times. Luckily, the remedy to this is the gamepad support that “Street Fighter X Mega Man” has. Simply plug in a USB controller and you can instantly experience “Street Fighter X Mega Man” as if it was a console game. This instantly makes the game very accessible and comfortable, especially for players that are familiar with “Mega Man” games on consoles.
“Street Fighter X Mega Man” doesn’t reinvent the wheel when it comes to a “Mega Man” game. You’re instantly faced with a familiar scene as Mega Man’s picture is surrounded by pictures of the game’s bosses, each one representing a stage that can be selected in any order of the player’s choosing. Where it does differentiate itself is with the bosses themselves.
Instead of the usual robotic bosses that Mega Man faces off against most times, he is instead faced with a sizable amount of characters from the “Street Fighter” series. They aren’t there for show either, each “Street Fighter” character shows off signature moves from their own games as they deliver a world of hurt to Mega Man, and it really is a fanboy’s dream come true. Getting electrocuted by Blanka or taking a shoryuken to the face will have Mega Man tapping out quick unless the player can adjust to the quirks of each boss fight.
The stages themselves, each themed specifically to its boss, are varied and well done. You may also find yourself humming along to some familiar tunes as you play them. Besides the controls, the only other issue was the lack of a save feature, but if you can set a bit of time aside for the game then that isn’t much of an issue.
At the end of the day “Street Fighter X Mega Man” is a great addition to the “Mega Man” series. It provides a great classic experience that rewards persistence and quick reflexes while giving it a fresh feel with the “Street Fighter” characters as boss fights. If you get frustrated easily this game is sure to push your buttons so beware.
“Street Fighter X Mega Man” can be downloaded for free on Capcom’s website, so there’s no reason not to try it out!
