You are on a spinning ball in space, which in turn is orbiting the Sun. Other planets and planetary bodies are also spinning and orbiting the Sun, and the Sun is orbiting within our galaxy. Moons are orbiting planets. Comets are on their paths. Stars and planets are spinning and orbiting in other galaxies, and these galaxies are spinning and moving in space relative to each other and to our galaxy, in clusters of galaxies, super clusters of clusters of galaxies.
All of this is moving relative to each of us, and each of us separately and in concert with all of it, in our position on this spinning ball we call the Earth.
This is happening at varying speeds. A few examples of these speeds: At the Equator, the Earth’s rotational speed is around 1,070 miles per hour, orbital speed of the Earth around the Sun is 70,000 miles per hour, and the Sun’s orbital speed around our galaxy is said to be 450,000 miles per hour. Sounds fast, but it is relatively slow compared to the speed of light at 186,000 miles per second, which is 650 million miles per hour.
Somehow all of this is happening, and there is a force we have called gravity, which is still not understood by today’s scientists. It is one of the four fundamental forces of nature discovered by scientists in our modern era.
The four are gravitation, electromagnetism, strong nuclear force, and weak nuclear force. Newton described it over 300 years ago as an apple falling from a tree, and he said that celestial bodies in space behave exactly the same way as the apple falling from the tree.
Einstein has modified Newton’s description of gravity by describing it in his general theory of relativity as a force affecting the space-time continuum, as a wave expression of the fabric of space and time. A gravitational wave moves at the speed of light.
Still, no one knows how it works yet. It is one of the fundamental problems in particle physics. Quantum mechanics and the general theory of relativity are not reconciled with regard to gravity.
What we do know is that gravity works, and it works really well.
What I find to be curious is that most people are not very aware of it in their own bodies, and they suffer the consequences of this lack of awareness.
What I mean by this statement is that many people needlessly suffer pain and dysfunction from a lack of awareness of neutral posture, and people also suffer from events that happen to the body when they are in static positions too long away from neutral posture.
My teaching and this article series explains my view of posture, and how the body is designed to align with gravity, just as everything in the Universe aligns and moves with gravity.
Alignment with classic neutral posture can bring about balance, freedom of movement, relief from pain, and you can be handling gravity as your body is designed to handle it.
The position you are aiming for is called classic neutral posture. This is first expressed in a standing position, and after the muscles are comfortably at rest in this position, you will be able to move more efficiently with less effort.
You will learn how the energy of gravity is designed to be carried by the body in different positions. This puts less strain on the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and connective tissue.
You will also be more efficient in all systems of the body, including the functions of the brain, nervous system, circulatory system, breathing. In fact, all organs and systems of the body/mind benefit from the development of neutral posture.
The design of classic neutral posture shows that gravity is being primarily handled by the bones of the skeleton, and this puts minimal stress on the musculature of the body.
When you exercise, perform yoga, dance, and sports with this awareness; you will develop your body to be in accordance with celestial alignment of gravity, including your muscles, and all systems. This will help you to excel at any performance.
When you move with this internal awareness and balance, you will move with grace, speed, and power, because you are moving in correct alignment.
When you move away from standing position, the muscles are positioned and toned to handle this movement with the greatest efficiency. Each muscle and muscle group should be allowed to move in its natural range of motion without restriction. In this way, the skeleton is free to assume the correct alignment to handle the force of gravity.
If you stray from the gravity line in static positions for too long a period of time, or move with a lack of this celestial awareness, then you will suffer the consequences. Those commonly include tight muscles, myofascial adhesions in the area of your neck and upper shoulders, and often, your lower back.
In my clinical practice as a Licensed Massage Therapist, I have helped many people over the years with these restrictions, through massage therapy. I have also helped many people over the years with these problems by teaching them yoga.
I am basing these ideas directly from my clinical experiences working with thousands of people over the past 40 years, first as a yoga teacher, climbing instructor, and then in the past seven years, as a massage therapist.
There are other problems that can occur too. I will not go into this now, but they do exist for many people, limiting what they can do.
Healing Light Yoga
Feel the gravity line of the celestial order of the universe through your bones. In order to know this, you must quiet the mind long enough to pay attention to your body. To facilitate this, it is essential to know how to breathe properly. Breathing and the function of the heart work in concert.
So really the first steps are to breathe with the yogic breath, focus the mind, and attune to the heart.
Keep your mind centered in Ajna, the command wheel. This is known as the sixth chakra. Open the heart chakra, Anahata, and the throat chakra, Vishuddha. Open all the chakras (wheels of energy), including Manipura, Swadhistana, Muladhara, and the crown chakra, Sahasrara, will blossom and open in pure light of awareness.
Breathe in the ocean breath, Ujjayi Pranayama. This will help to focus your mind, and allow you to tune into your body and feel the natural gravity line, and connect with the Earth and all celestial bodies governed by gravity.
Sink the column of light which is the gravity line into the center of the Earth. Feel the corresponding power soar upward and outward into the stars. There is always energy moving in both directions.
The gravity line aligns through the bones as they are stacked in classic neutral posture.
When you are moving or in positions other than Standing Mountain pose, Tadasana, you will have a counter-balance in line with gravity that will utilize your body’s natural design to handle these movements and positions. The second photo in the slideshow shows Warrior II, Virabhadrasana II.
