Stephanie Meyer spoke to The Hollywood Reporter on Nov. 16 about the shocking ending to “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2.” For those unaware, the movie changed the ending slightly, although they did keep the spirit of how the franchise ended.
The book ended with the Volturi arriving to murder the Cullen clan because they believed that Edward and Bella’s child was an Immortal. The climax came when the Cullen clan and Volturi settled everything through talking. That could never work in a movie, and the filmmakers came up with a brilliant idea of how to make the movie exciting while keeping the spirit of the book.
“It’s something I came up with,” Meyer said. “We knew that they were going to want some action in the end, so we came up with a way to do that which was organic to the book, and I don’t have a problem with it. I don’t think it actually jumps off the page that far. In a way, it’s sort of in the book, we just don’t get to see it because we only see Bella’s perspective. It all makes sense.”
When Meyer said it was in the book, that is because it was there, you just couldn’t see it. Alice had the premonition of what would happen in the Volturi attacked and they saw that vision. The book couldn’t describe it because Bella never saw it. However, the movie could, and boy did it.
“I’ve been waiting so long for this night,” director Bill Condon said, “to see it with this huge group of people. And, because there is a surprise, to see how this goes over.”
At the Oklahoma City press screening, it was a shocking moment. Hard-core “Twilight” fans sat in shock when the big shock started, and it was not until things finally wrapped up that they finally realized it was a perfect end for the movie.
“I think [screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg] may have mentioned something first, ‘OK, this may be stupid, but what about this?’ And I was like, ‘What about that!’ And it was one of those moments; the light bulb came on, and we both suddenly got incredibly excited about it. That was it, we were both on board,” Meyer said.
