The annual New Year’s honours list in the UK this year pays tribute to a Beatle’s daughter, the wife of their record producer and an actor who was seen in two of their films, it was announced Saturday.
One of the news items out of the list that’s getting a lot of attention is that Paul McCartney is no longer the only McCartney to be honored with a title. Stella McCartney was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) “for service to fashion.”
But Stella isn’t the only person with a Beatle connection to be so honored with an OBE. Lady Judy Gordon Martin, the wife of Beatles producer Sir George Martin and the mother of Giles Martin, who has been doing much of the production work on recent Beatles releases, is also being honored with an OBE “for services to music and charity.” Lady Martin is director of the Young Person’s Concert Foundation, which also includes Sir George Martin as one of its patrons.
Also being honored is Jeremy Lloyd, who played the tall dancer in the Beatles first film “A Hard Day’s Night” and a bit part in their second film “Help!” He later was a regular on “Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In” and a writer for the wonderful British comedy series “Are You Being Served.” He is being honored for “services to British comedy.”
You can see a complete list of all those being honored here.
In another honor for the Martin family. The Music Producers Guild will present Sir George Martin with an Award for Outstanding Contribution to UK Music early next year, the group announced earlier this month.
Steve Levine, chairman of the Music Producers Guild, said in a statement: “The Outstanding Contribution Award acknowledges those who have made a significant contribution over a long period of time to the success of the UK music recording industry, so we are thrilled that Sir George Martin has agreed to accept the Music Producers Guild’s highest honour. Many record producers around the world owe George a huge debt of gratitude, not just for his inspired production techniques, but also for his efforts to ensure that all producers rightfully receive a royalty for their work.”
