Sunny weather and mild temperatures will greet skiers and snowboarders this holiday weekend at Squaw Valley ski resort in Lake Tahoe.
What also will be pleasing for skiers and riders is the addition of more terrain.
Squaw Valley will open additional terrain Thanksgiving day and throughout Thanksgiving weekend.
Squaw Valley will be opening 13 lifts, including seven lifts on the upper mountain – a rare occasion this early in the season. This will be the first time in 10 years that Squaw has opened Emigrant chairlift, located on one of Squaw’s highest peaks, for Thanksgiving day.
The Belmont terrain park will also be open, offering 10 small to medium features.
The lifts that are scheduled to be open Thanksgiving day include:
• Gold Coast Express
• Shirley Lake Express
• Mountain Meadow
• Bailey’s Beach
• Aerial Tram
• Squaw Creek
• Red Dog
• Tucker carpet at SnoVentures
• Murphy carpet at Squaw Kids
Squaw Valley is able to open the upper mountain thanks to the great early season snowfall and the resorts’ vastly improved snowmaking system.
In addition to skiing and riding, guests can also enjoy mountaintop ice skating at High Camp on Thanksgiving. Squaw Valley’s ice rink is located at 8,200 feet and offers spectacular views of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding Sierra Nevada mountains. The ice rink will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., weather permitting.
The sun will be shining on Thanksgiving day and for much of the holiday weekend for skiers and riders at Lake Tahoe ski resorts.
The Weather Channel is predicting daytime temperature highs in the 50s, while the evening temperatures will dip into the 20s and possibly go lower through Sunday. No snow is in the forecast.
Although there was precipitation this week, there was little addition to the Sierra snowpack. Practically every Lake Tahoe ski resort on Thanksgiving morning was reporting no snow in the previous 24 hours.
There will be eight Lake Tahoe ski resorts open Thanksgiving day and one more – Homewood ski resort – will be opening on Friday. See the list of resort openings below.
