National Geographic recently ran a program titled “Mayan Apocalypse” illustrating concerns and beliefs around the Mayan Calendar. The narrator of the program explained about the 13th Baktun ending on midnight of December 21, 2012 and called this a “seismic moment” and the end of a cycle of creation. The narrator then stated that “increasing numbers of people now believe this date will herald the end of the world.” The furor around that date was huge. This program is part of a series that National Geographic titled “Doomsday Preppers.” As I write this article, the date is now December 31, 2012. So, what happened?
Families all over the country prepared for doomsday, training their families in disaster preparedness.
Robyn Peterson, Surefire Community, said that she believed people should be prepared for widespread social panic following the kind of apocalyptic disaster as would happen in December 2012. In the National Geographic program, Peterson stated that because of the planets aligning for the first time and the earth having a deteriorated ozone layer, the Sun’s energy would thus be focused into the planet and possibly cause huge disaster. Part of her training includes firearms. Shhe said that solar flares would cause electrical distribution systems to short circuit.
Professor John W. Hooper commented on the tendency to take a dismal view of earth’s future by saying that it has to do with our feeling like we have no control.
Hooper said that there are two interpretations of the end of the 13th Baktun, with one being a cataclysmic end of creation and the other being a more metaphorical “ending.” In this metaphorical view, Hooper said that this is more of a “metaphysical transformation of consciousness, a realization of the spiritual, and acceptance of revealed truths and visionary experiences; the kinds of things that mystics have been interested in for a very long time.”
Since the Earth has not seen the cataclysmic apocalypse prophesied by many, perhaps we are quietly moving into the latter interpretaition explained by Hooper. In fact, many spiritual leaders have talked for years how mankind is moving into a new age in which higher consciousness will be more commonly shared by the Earth’s population.
In coming into 2012 in only a few hours from the publication of this article, people can learn from a wide variety of resources in developing higher consciousness to participate in a new age of our civilization. Even if the Mayan Prophecy is simply an error in reading a calendar, any of these spiritual pursuits can only serve to help a person with greater attunement of mind, body, and spirit.

Be careful in learning spiritual development from just any website or teacher. One good measure of a spiritual teacher’s credibility would be to look at their website(s) and read what they had to say about 12/21/12. If they were advocating widespread preparation for an upcoming apocalypse simply based on interpretations of the Mayan Calendar, you may want to look elsewhere. Regardless of where you find your direction, stay connected and dedicated to the path you choose.
