For the last 50 years James Bond has entertained thrill seekers and movie goers worldwide as one of the most famous characters ever in literary and cinematic history. The latest in the James Bond franchise is Skyfall, to be released this Friday into theaters nationwide. As the 23rd film in the Bond series, Skyfall brings more action and adventure to the super spy who always requests that his martinis be shaken, not stirred.
What is Skyfall about?
In short, Skyfall sees Bond’s loyalty to M tested while M16 comes under attack from a former M16 member. The opening sees Bond (Daniel Craig) and agent Eve (Naomie Harris) in Turkey on a mission to recover a stolen computer hard drive from a murdered M16 agent. As Bond and Eve chase the mercenary Patrice, in attempt to recover the disk, Bond is shot in the shoulder. He is later assumed “missing, presumed killed.” Meanwhile back at M16 headquarters, M (Judy Dench), the head of M16, is under pressure to retire from her post when M16 comes under attack.
Bond, having used his wound as a means to retire, returns to the field in response to the attack on M16. He comes across a woman named Sévérine who leads him to her employer, the man behind the attack on the agency. That man is Raoul Silva (Javier Bardem), a former M16 agent. Silva at one point had been held captive and tortured by the Chinese, for which he blames M. After his initial attack on the agency, Silva again pursues M in a public inquiry about the failed Turkish mission that Bond and Eve were on in the beginning of the film. From here Bond and M retreat to his childhood home in a remote part of Scotland: Skyfall Lodge. As this is a James Bond film, expect a massive action sequence that sees Bond take on his latest villain, Silva.
Returning for his third time as James Bond is Daniel Craig. Debuting as Bond in Casino Royale (2006), Craig enjoyed further success with his second outing as Bond in 2008’s Quantum of Solace. Now in Skyfall, Craig is under contract for at least 2 more Bond films. Almost losing the role to Henry Cavill and Idris Elba, Craig has taken to Bond particularly well and has been a popular choice to fill the super spy’s tuxedo.
Returning for the seventh and final time as M is Dame Judy Dench.
Meet the New Cast Members
James Bond needs a good villain and in this case it is the silver-haired former M16 agent Raoul Silva. Played by Bond newcomer Javier Bardem, Silva has become a cyber-terrorist who seeks revenge on those he believes betrayed him. Director Sam Mendes (also a new comer to the Bond franchise) has been said to have campaigned heavily for Bardem’s involvement in Skyfall.
Almost as notorious and famous as Bond himself are the women who play the Bond girls. Naomie Harris (of Pirates of the Caribbean fame) plays Eve, an M16 agent who may or may not be Ms. Moneypenny. For those Bond savvy people out there you probably know answer! Also new to the Bond girl universe is Bérénice Lim Marlohe as Sévérine. Marlohe’s character interacts with Bond to lead him to his adversary, Raoul Silva.
Look for these new faces as well as returning James Bond veterans Daniel Craig’s and Judi Dench’s when Skyfall opens in theaters this Friday, November 9th. And yes there will be Midnight Screenings at 12:01am Friday Morning!
