On September 9, 2012, I got the pleasure of investigating side by side with Dave Goldinger. We explored the Prospect Place Mansion in Trinway, Ohio. I must say it was a hell of an experience.
John: Hey Dave, it was awesome being locked down with you in a place of this magnitude. Other than my stomach growling from the pizza we had, I believe something is going on there. I don’t say it too often, but Prospect Place is definitely the real deal.
Dave: Hello John, it is always a pleasure to speak with you.
John: Let’s get to the interview. How long have you been in the paranormal field and what got you into it?
Dave: I have been in the paranormal field as a team leader since December 9, 2008. My team, the Akron Paranormal & Entity Research group have investigated many of this country’s top reported locations for paranormal activity. I have had numerous personal experiences ever since I was a young teenager, so nearly for forty-five years now. My father purchased a home in 1963 where a man had killed himself approximately ten years prior. My entire family started experiencing strange phenomena shortly after moving into the house. “Ralph” as the man had been known, would make his presence known in many ways, turning lights on and off, raising and lowering window blinds, turning doorknobs, and opening and closing doors on occasion. We were never frightened of his presence, we just considered him an extended member of the family that we couldn’t see.
John: Do you consider yourself a believer or skeptic?
Dave: I consider myself a skeptical believer. I know something exists in the afterlife but I need proof. My team and I will always look for logical reasons why some activity occurs and if we can’t find a logical reason, then what we have may be considered paranormal related.
John: Have you ever had a paranormal encounter? If so, what have you experienced or witnessed?
Dave: Other than my experiences with “Ralph”, I had an entity pass through my body during a house cleansing in Butler, Pennsylvania, back in 2010. That was an experience I will never forget. My teammate along with the homeowner were conducting a cleansing to remove an unwanted spirit from the home. When they told the entity that it had to leave, a wind passed through my body, knocking me to my knees. I heard multiple voices in both ears and was rendered disoriented for about ten minutes. Then things subsided.
John: Are you involved with any paranormal groups, if so which ones and why?
Dave: I started my team, the Akron Paranormal & Entity Research in 2008 and I had never worked with any other teams up until then. I did what many newcomers that start in this field do by going by what I saw on television. Since that time, my team and I have worked alongside many reputable teams in our state as well as other locations. Along the way I noticed a lot of competition between teams and I wanted to try and find a solution that more teams could work together in harmony. It took awhile but I developed an online paranormal family on Facebook where many teams throughout the country as well as some abroad could get together to share ideas and methods of investigating. We could also use this platform to help educate the general public on how a paranormal team works, by answering any questions they may have regarding the afterlife. I am proud to say that as of this month, our APER Paranormal Family on Facebook now boasts nearly 650 members strong. Our family consists of investigators, psychics, mediums, skeptics, and people not in the field but with an interest.
John: If I called and told you my that my place was haunted, and asked for help, how would you approach the case step-by-step? What types of equipment would you use?
Dave: Whenever a client approaches us with questions or concerns regarding their home or business, I personally contact them with a phone call or an email within twenty-four hours. We arrange a time suitable for all involved to come to them to discuss what we can do to help them. If we go to someone’s home, there will never be more than two from the team for the initial walkthrough. We will sit and listen to their reports, watch their movements or their eyes, and we have been doing this long enough to be able to tell if someone is serious or playing around. We will walk through their home making it a point to see the areas that they have reported activity in. We will conduct a mini sweep of the area using an EMF meter, camera, and voice recorder. Many people’s fears and concerns can sometimes be attributed to faulty wiring, noisy pipes, or the house settling. If we determine that an investigation is warranted, we have a five page questionaire for the client to fill out about their activity. Once we conclude our initial walkthrough of the property we will arrange a time usually between three to five days to come back with the team to conduct our complete investigation. The equipment we use is basically the same as many other teams use; digital video camera with infrared, digital voice recorders, EMF meters, temperature gauges. Occasionally we may use surveillance cameras depending on the size of the location. Also we’ve discovered that our own senses can be a valued tool to use. Our sight, hearing, and sense of smell can play a vital role during an investigation.
John: Have you ever got proof positive evidence of the paranormal?
Dave: I personally have captured full-body apparitions on video as well as in still pictures, but as many if not all in this field know, there has never been any positive proof to date of the afterlife, and that is why we continue our journey in this field.
John: What is the most haunted place in Ohio that you have investigated? Is there a place in Ohio that you want to explore but haven’t been to?
Dave: The most haunted location in Ohio that I have experienced to date would have to be the Sedamsville Rectory in Cincinati, Ohio, but the two places that my team and I long to get into is the old Molly Starks Hospital just outside of Canton, Ohio, or the Bissman Building in Mansfield, Ohio.
John: Name a person or group in our Ohio paranormal community that you want to investigate with. Where would you like to explore?
Dave: There are so many people I want to investigate with, and the numbers are staggering but to name a few, I’d like to work with Jenna Harleman and her team, Seeking Truth Apparition Research Society, or you and your team, the Ohio Truth Hunters. We are open to just about any location, after all we are in this field to learn as well as to help.
John: Do you have any suggestions or advice for the new investigators just starting out in this field?
Dave: Listen… listen to your leaders, listen to your gut, and document everything, also never go into a location alone or without permission.
John: Dave, thanks for inviting me to stumble around in the dark at Prospect Place with you. I had a blast and we got some great footage. Seize the night and happy hunting!
Dave Goldinger gave Prospect Place a rating of 5 out of 5 stars.
