To celebrate the end of the world on Friday, December 21st, the eclectic jam band Shedding Watts will be rocking out in concert at The Bottleneck with 3 Son Green and Interior Sea in what will be an apocalyptic great show! The guys in Shedding Watts have a lot of love for their home town of Lawrence, Kansas and will be celebrating the big night with everyone, whether the Mayans were right or wrong.
Singer, guitarist and songwriter Jake Eisfelder started playing music with some of the other band members during weekly jam sessions. It would not be long before Jake, Beau, Trey and Craig were writing songs and Shedding Watts was formed. Taygun joined the band years later.
Part of what makes Shedding Watts so appealing is the band’s wide range of influences, coming from the band members’ various favorite styles of music.
“Trey is more of a country guy, Bo likes jam bands, Ty likes progressive music, Craig likes a little bit heavier rock, and I am more blues rock based but we can always find common ground in the midst of it all,” Jake said. “I think our sound encompasses all of those styles.”
Jake said their songs are usually written by individual members of the band, who bring them to practice, where the guys hash out the final arrangement, instrumentation and harmonies.
“Personally, I am inspired by love, relationships, science, science fiction and history but we have songs about a wide variety of subjects ranging from ‘The Reacharound’ and ‘Whiskey and Women’ to ‘Beautiful Mind F**k’ and ‘Inertia,” Jake said.
Aside from Taygun, who grew up in Turkey, the members of Shedding Watts come from the Kansas City area. Jake studied at KU and now lives in Lawrence.
“I truly love Lawrence and love to play at many of the venues in town. Years ago, after graduating from KU, I spent several months at an audio engineering trade school in Ohio. When I returned, I remember walking downtown to grab a beer and it hit me how much Lawrence felt like home,” Jake said. “I don’t plan on ever leaving.”
The members of Shedding Watts work hard for the thrill of playing live shows, never for the money. Jake said his favorite thing about live shows is meeting new fans.
“I think our music has the power to reel people in even if it is not their favorite style. Part of that is because of our varied influences but also, I think part of it is because of the wide variety of music that is available today. The average music fan has much more eclectic tastes than people did just a decade or two ago, so if you put good music in front of them, they will appreciate it.”
Shedding Watts is looking forward to their show at The Bottleneck on Friday, December 21st. They are fans of the other bands they will be sharing the stage with; Interior Sea and 3 Son Green.
“Since it is supposed to be the end of the world we are expecting a big night in Lawrence,” Jake said. “Let’s just hope the end doesn’t happen first thing in the morning. See you there!”
