Shaquille O’Neal is embroiled in a lawsuit with his former mistress, Vanessa Lopez. Now it seems that Ms. Lopez’s attorneys are planning on deposing O’Neal’s former employee, Shawn Darling.
Lopez’s attorneys are expecting Darling to testify to the fact that O’Neal forced him to spy on Lopez. However, Darling’s credibility complicates the already convoluted lawsuit.
Darling’s reputation is more than just tarnished, it’s downright ruined. Darling is a convicted felon who can say he has a long criminal record. The ex-con has faced arrests and charges in more than 15 criminal cases including bank fraud and misuse of a Social Security number.
Lopez’s lawsuit against Shaquille O’Neal alleges that he began harassing her after she told him she was pregnant. The court documents indicate that Lopez claims Shaq not only accused her of sleeping around but when she ended their relationship he started threatening her.
O’Neal tried to get Lopez’s lawsuit that she filed in Orange County, Florida dismissed but was unsuccessful. The court documents reflect that Darling is scheduled to be deposed on January 15 and is expected to take the entire day.
Shaquille O’Neal’s attorney Benjamin Reid released a statement regarding Darling. “Shawn Darling, a computer consultant engage by basketball star Shaquille O’Neal to install and service a home theater and then service personal computer equipment, copies without permission thousands of emails and communications from Mr. O’Neal.”
“Darling, an ex-convict with a long criminal record that failed to disclose and his from Mr. O’Neal, has demanded $12 million in exchange for not releasing Mr. O’Neal’s personal and confidential emails and communications. When Mr. O’Neal refused to be extorted, Darling riled a lawsuit claiming “invasion of privacy and emotional distress.”
Vanessa Lopez hired famed attorneys Gloria Allred and Nathan Goldberg. The lawsuit was filed in 2010 in Miami Dade County. The multi-count lawsuit alleges O’Neal of racketeering, invasion of privacy, and intentional inflection of emotional distress.
According to Lopez’s attorneys Darling will be testifying that “he has knowledge that O’Neal did access Vanessa Lopez’s phone by bypassing the security system for the account and that O’Neal erased messages and changed Lopez’s password. O’Neal knows that Darling not only has knowledge of his bad acts that might be used against him in litigation.”
“O’Neal also knows that Darling has evidence that shows he cheated on his former wife with many more people than just Vanessa Lopez.”
The trial is scheduled to begin on March 25, 2013 and both O’Neal and Lopez are expected to testify. The pretrial conference is scheduled for March 18, 2013.
