Bob Marley moved to Camilla Georgia last year when his guardians packed up the household, including Bob and his three fellow felines to live a simpler life. The family also had seven dogs at the time but the pack has now grown to nine. Bob truly lived the story of big city cat moving to a little country town. Bob was part of my pack.
As with four other members of my furry children, I was privileged to help Bob and his siblings come into the world. His mom Chloe and her humans were living with us when the time came for her to deliver. From the very beginning Bob was a clown, always playing and pestering his litter mates. Plans were made to get mom spayed and all but one the babies would be going to the Humane Society of Pinellas County to find their forever homes. We made plans to add Bobs’ brother Skater to our pack. When the day came for the kittens to make their big move, Bob was nowhere to be found. Five humans searched the house up and down to no avail. A few minutes after the car left with his siblings, out sauntered Bob from Heaven only knows where! We decided at that moment if he wanted to stay that bad we would keep him as well as his brother Skater.
The years passed and Bob and Skater could always be counted on for a laugh, especially when cat-nip was involved. You had to be very cautious opening a bag of nip as Bob would jam his head right in the bag to get as much of the herb as possible. When he was given the name “Bob Marley” by my granddaughter Kayla we could not have known how much he would love “herb” like his namesake. He was always happy to be picked up and loved on by the grandchildren and was a genuine purring machine.
A few days ago it became apparent that Bob’s liver was failing and all that could be done was palliative. I have watched in amazement as our other cats, Baby, Diamond and Bob’s brother Skater kept vigil, often lying with their bodies over his frail little frame. One only has to look at the pictures of them comforting their “brother” to know animals feel love and have the ability to bring care and comfort. How could anyone ever for a moment believe that they do not have the ability to feel and to love?
I helped my beautiful Bobby come into this world and today I helped him leave. He and Baby were snuggled up in my arms together when Bob drew his last breath.
You fought like a warrior to stay with us. I hope you are whole again and will be waiting for me when my time comes my precious one. The house feels different, not the same. Your presence, your spirit is sorely missed. Skater, Diamond and Baby all seem so sad, cuddled together on your bed. They seem to want to comfort me, or perhaps for me to comfort them. We give our hearts so completely to our furry companions and they in return give us unconditional, absolute love and devotion. Theirs is a love like no other and saying good-bye makes the heart ache and the tears flow.
Rest in Peace Bob Marley until we meet again. Your earthly remains will be buried on the grounds where you watched the squirrels and birds from your perch upstairs but your special spirit will remain firmly ensconced in my heart forever.
